Once an account has been created, you can manage users rights and permissions via the Security Configuration Management Console It is here where you can establish whether or not you want users to be able to do such things as rename their accounts, shut down the computer, and a zillion other behind-the-scenes settings First, let s look at an area of security that runs largely behind the scenes, but is important to know about because of the benefit it has on overall system security Windows Service Hardening is meant to secure services that have access to your system Once we talk about improvements that have been made to it, we ll take a closer look at security policies and what you can do with them in Windows Vista

The main way in which user rights and permissions are managed is through Group Policy as has been the case in Windows for quite some time Microsoft bolsters many areas of local security in Vista with improvements to the security settings for local policies, which are managed through Active Directory Group Policies (if you are working in an Active Directory environment) or the Group Policy Object Editor (if your network is not part of an Active Directory environment) To manage Group Policy on a local computer, you can access security settings by using the Security Configuration Management Console The following sections explain the usage and setting of changes to Audit Policy, User Rights Assignment, and Security Options To manage each of these settings, you must first start the Local Security Settings Console The quickest way to get there is as follows:

individual users 1 Click Start and then type secpolmsc in the Run/Search box 2 Press ENTER The Local Security Settings Console (which is part of MMC) is shown in Figure 9-4
Audit Policy Changes
The Audit Policy feature is used to collect information about resource and privilege use If you enable auditing policies, you can track security events, such as when a user logs on or when an object has been accessed Once you ve opened the Local Security Settings Console, you can access the Audit Policy portion by expanding the Local Policies node in the left pane and then clicking the Audit Policy node This is shown in Figure 9-5 To view or change a policy, right-click it and then select Properties from the context menu An example of the Audit Object Access policy is shown in Figure 9-6 Audit Policy contains several events that can be tracked Table 9-1 lists those policies and their default settings

User Rights Assignment Changes
User Rights Assignment policies establish what a user or group can do on a local computer These settings can be managed by accessing the User Rights Assignment feature in the Local Security Settings Console First, open the Local Security Settings Console Next, expand the Local Policies node in the left pane, and then click the User Rights Assignment node This is shown in Figure 9-7 Windows Vista adds several new settings for User Rights Assignment that were not provided in Windows XP A major reason for these changes is due to User Account Control, which provides a thicker layer of protection for computers It ensures that there is a separation of user and administrator accounts NOTE We ll talk about User Account Control later in this chapter An example policy Adjust Memory Quotas For A Process is shown in Figure 9-8 Table 9-2 lists the settings for User Rights Assignment, along with their default settings One change in Windows Vista is that the Power Users group has been eliminated, and is only maintained for backward compatibility with legacy applications As such, the Power Users group is not granted user rights in Vista
