BIOS implementation, plus a startup key A startup key provides an additional factor of authentication by requiring either an additional physical key (a USB flash drive with a machine-readable key written to it) or a PIN entry that was set by the user You configure volumes for BitLocker protection and enroll key files into a storage method using the BitLocker Drive Encryption Microsoft Management Console (MMC), found in the Security applet of Control Panel, or by using the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) administrative interface Each enrolled key storage method has a key file, and the Vista boot loader has to be able to find the file The Vista loader looks for key container files in the root directory of each storage device listed in the BIOS that is formatted with NTFS For information on how to enhance BitLocker with custom authentication provider, visit wwwmicrosoftcom/whdc/system/platform/hwsecurity/BitLockerExtmspx and download the white paper

Creating the BitLocker Partition on a Computer with an Operating System
If you have a computer running Vista already and would like to integrate BitLocker Drive Encryption, you have to follow a different course You will need to have another partition available, either by using unallocated space on an existing drive or by adding an additional hard disk drive to the system Once you have the additional storage area: 1 Boot the computer running Vista into the Vista Setup environment using the installation media in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive: a Choose to boot from the drive hosting the Vista installation media, proceed through the loader screens, and enter System Recovery Options b Clear any operating systems listed in the System Recovery Options list, and then click Next c Click Command Line Window In the command-line window, type diskpartexe 2 Create the BitLocker partition on the new hard disk drive by launching Diskpart from the search bar in the Start menu: a Once in the interactive Diskpart window, select the hard disk for use by typing Select disk 1 assuming that one (1) is the new disk number You can detect the disk number by logging on to Vista, launching compmgmtmsc, and viewing the disk configuration b Create a primary partition by typing create partition primary Set the drive letter by typing assign letter=D, or assign it another drive letter if D is not available c Format the partition by typing Format FS=NTFS QUICK Then set the minimum partition size to 450 MB by typing Shrink minimum=450 d Quit the Diskpart application by typing exit Close the Command Prompt window by typing exit NOTE You can use Compmgmtmsc to access the Disk Management Console and accomplish these tasks You will need to reboot Vista into the installation media to accomplish the following tasks
