The aforementioned section highlighted the broad strokes of a Windows Vista deployment Let s drill down a little deeper and take a look at some of the specifics that are involved in a Vista deployment While earlier versions of Windows could be a headache when it came to deploying them, Microsoft aims to make deployment much less of a problem with Vista Some of the improvements in Vista that should make the deployment process smoother include: Modularization of device features This means that you only deploy what you want to, which keeps the images as streamlined as possible A single answer file (unattendxml), which uses the standard eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format A standard imaging format called Windows Imaging Format (WIM) This employs compression and single-instance storage to keep the image as small as possible WIM is file-based, rather than sector-based, like most disk image formats This makes it possible to mount WIM images to folders so you can easily add and remove components without having to rebuild the entire image A disk-imaging tool called ImageX that can be run from the command line or within the Windows PE environment
