In the past, if a user without special recovery tools deleted a file, it was essentially gone Poof Vanished Since then, Microsoft added dialog boxes confirming this action However, that wasn t even enough for people, so Microsoft added the Recycle Bin You could delete a file (and still be asked if you want to delete it), but it wasn t completely gone until you emptied the Recycle Bin Still this wasn t enough for some users The next step in file protection is what s known as shadow copies It s not the title of the latest Tom Clancy book Rather, it is a way to get back files if you accidentally erase them or save over a file you didn t mean to save over

Supporting Vista
For example, let s say you ve got an important presentation coming up and you ve been artfully crafting your PowerPoint presentation It s almost perfect Regrettably, one wrong mouse click later, and you ve copied over the file with some stupid PowerPoint presentation about mullets that your buddy across town e-mailed you It s gone, right Not with shadow copies
Turn It On
The ability to make shadow copies isn t turned on by default Enabling it will take some time, but it ll be well worth your effort To enable shadow copies: 1 Open the Backup And Restore Center 2 Click the Back Up Files button from the Back Up Files Or Your Entire Computer section of the dialog box 3 You ll be asked where you want to save the backup Select from the pull-down list, or select a network location NOTE If you want to know specifically which types of files are to be shadowed, point your mouse cursor at the selection, and you ll see a list of file types 4 Click Next 5 Vista will present you with another dialog box in which you are asked to select which file types you want to make shadow copies of This is shown in Figure 14-8 6 Click Next 7 The next dialog box asks you how often you want to make backups of your files, as Figure 14-9 shows Set your schedules and then click Save Settings And Start Backup 8 Once the process starts, a dialog box like the one in Figure 14-10 appears NOTE If, for some reason, you re still using the File Allocation Table (FAT) file system, you won t be able to use shadow copies The backup process will take some time, especially at first When you want to enable the Shadow Copies process, expect it to have to run a little while
Recover a File
If you ve altered a file and want to recover a previous version, right-click the file in question, and then select Properties Click the Previous Versions tab, and Vista will start looking for other versions of the file The results of such a search are shown in Figure 14-11 You can preview each file in a read-only version to find out which version you want to restore To restore it, just drag the file to a folder, or select it and click Restore to restore it to its original location
