PERFORMANCE MONITORING
Monitoring system performance has not changed much in Vista in comparison to previous platforms
Performance Information and Tools
A great way to view Vista s collection of performance-related tools is to visit the Performance Information And Tools window You may be impressed with the array of options that you can access from this area To open the main window, shown in Figure 14-33: 1 Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel on the right side of the Start menu
Microsoft Windows Vista Administration
Figure 14-32 The new Services tab in the Task Manager is used to start and stop services
2 From Control Panel, click the System And Maintenance link 3 Locate and click the Performance Information And Tools link The entry window for the Performance Information And Tools area shows you the Windows Experience index base score This indicates the performance and overall capability of the local system The index base score is calculated as the lowest of the subscores given to a set of hardware components that defines the overall performance of a computer Those components include the processor, memory, graphics card, and hard disk drive The overall base score is not nearly as useful as the individual subscores, because the base score simply takes the lowest subscore If you have a fast process, for example, with a base score of 59, and a nominal gaming graphics capacity of 20, then the base score is 20 If software is processor-dependent and not a game, then the 20 score may mislead you into thinking that your system may not be optimal for the application In fact, software vendors are planning to have recommendations for the minimum index to run their applications Vista has been given the following recommendations by Microsoft:
