Memory Diagnostic Tool
Vista includes a diagnostic tool that tests your installed system memory to verify that each memory module is functioning properly To open the tool, click the Start menu, and type memory or mdschedexe into the Search field, and then press ENTER Click the Memory Diagnostic Tool as it appears in the pane above the Search field In the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool dialog box, shown in Figure 15-7, click Restart Now And Check For Problems if you wish to execute the check immediately, or click Check For Problems The Next Time I Start My Computer if you are not ready to restart the computer Once the computer reboots, the tool loads automatically The running tool is shown in Figure 15-8 You can press F1 at any time to interrupt the default test and enter the Options menu While in the Options menu, choose between Basic, Standard, and Extended tests, and provide other testing parameters One of these parameters controls the number of test passes the tool will make, as shown in Figure 15-9 Use the TAB key to move between testing parameters When you have configured the tests to your satisfaction, press F10 to continue Your system will restart if it can when the testing is complete The results will be displayed when you log on Look for a pop-up window in the lower-right corner of the screen With any luck, the message will inform you that There were no memory problems detected
