One of the best security practices that an administrator can follow is to not routinely log on to Vista using an administrator account That is, you should only use your administrator privileges for managing certain parts of Vista that require administrator privileges The rest of the time you should log on with a more limited user account However, you should take the administrator privileges out of its sheath long enough to assign printer permissions Printer permissions are used to establish which printer properties yourself or your users can manage Permissions can be managed (locally) by the person who installed the printer or by the network administrator Vista includes four types of printer permissions: Print Users have the default permission level that allows them to print and cancel, pause, or restart files that they send to a printer

Permissions are germane to troubleshooting, because a user might be trying to do something he or she is not authorized to do For example, if the user is trying to move a document to the head of the print queue and cannot do it, there may not be a problem beyond the fact that the user doesn t have the permission to do so

To round out the discussion on printer troubleshooting, let s talk about how you can manage your printers Solving a problem may be as easy as deleting the file from the print queue and asking the user to resend it
Starting Print Management
The Print Management tool is part of the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) To start it, you can either type printmanagementmsc at the command prompt or you can follow these steps: 1 Click Start 2 Click Control Panel 3 Click Administrative Tools 4 Click Print Management The tool is shown in Figure 15-14
Viewing Printers
There are three places where printer information is stored on the Print Management console tree: Custom Printer Filters This file contains the All Printers, Printers Not Ready, and Printers With Jobs objects If you create your own filter for your printers, it will be contained in this folder as well Print Servers This file contains your network s print servers, all of which are given four objects that serve as filters for the servers printer information Those objects are: Drivers, Forms, Ports, and Printers Deployed Printers This file maintains a list of all the printers located in Print Management that are managed by Group Policy objects

Offline Print Servers
You can easily tell if a print server goes offline, because the server s icon will change and (Offline) is added to the end of the server name Also, all the printers on that server will be hidden from view until the server comes back online
Details
When you click a printer, its details are listed in the Jobs pane of the console, like the one shown in Figure 15-15 NOTE In Figure 15-15, extended view has been selected to show more details
