In earlier versions of Windows, when you would run out of virtual memory, you d be told of the impending problem, but Windows wouldn t do anything more to avoid trouble Windows Vista, on the other hand, tries to avoid the problem of unresponsive applications by using the Restart Manager

The Restart Manager is able to shut down and restart unresponsive applications While the application has still failed, you re spared the time drain of having to get involved, log out, or even restart the computer To help avoid running out of virtual memory, Vista employs the Resource Exhaustion Detection And Recovery system This monitors your system s virtual memory and warns you when you re running low While this is what earlier versions of Windows did, Vista goes an extra step and tells you what processes are using the most memory At this point, you can close applications using the Close Programs To Prevent Information Loss dialog box The exhaustion of system resources is also logged to the system event log, that can be reviewed later
Terminating Frozen Applications
If the worst does happen and the application does freeze, you can use the Task Manager to terminate a nonresponsive application Conventionally, you can start the Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then clicking Task Manager Alternatively, you can right-click the taskbar, and select Task Manager You can also open a command prompt window and type taskmgr When the Task Manager, shown in Figure 15-17, starts, locate and select the application that is not responding, and click End Task Ideally, that will end the frozen program and free up its resources for your system

Stopping Services or Processes
In a perfect world, Vista will keep all your programs running smoothly Plan B is to use the Task Manager to stop an unresponsive application But if even that doesn t stop an errant program, there s another step you can take While still in the Task Manager, click the Processes tab This is shown in Figure 15-18 Examine the processes and look for the one that is causing trouble For example, if you are having problems with an open Word document, look for winwordexe Highlight it and then click End Process A Task Manager Warning dialog box, saying Terminating a process can cause undesired results, including loss of data and system instability The process will not be given the chance to save its state or data before it is terminated Are you sure you want to terminate the process will appear Confirm the process by clicking OK or End Now
Advanced Boot Options
Every so often, the installation of a device causes Windows Vista to crash (thus, Microsoft s Device Driver Approval Program) If you ve fallen victim to this, you can use Windows Vista s Advanced Boot Options to restart Vista, ferret out the problem, and eliminate it
