Third-party studies indicate that because Vista is easier to deploy, manage, and support, it reduces TCO One of the frameworks that Microsoft has developed for decreasing TCO for the Windows platform is called the Infrastructure Optimization Model (IOM) IOM identifies phases of IT management maturity based on the number of best practices in use by the management team Using third-party studies, Microsoft argues convincingly that moving into the progressively more dynamic phases of management maturity can save substantially on the per-PC resource requirements It says that companies can save 66 percent in labor costs, for example, when moving from the first stage of the IOM optimization model to the third stage Table 1-1 shows what those cost savings might look like Vista networks incorporate more of the best practices that define the higher stages of the IOM They also reduce complexity, another key factor in TCO figures Key best practices that are well supported in a Vista enterprise include: Standardize on a single operating system The most compelling justification for multiple operating systems is compatibility between the OS and applications Vista offers a virtualized registry and directory, greatly increasing the compatibility Manage PC software and configuration centrally With previous OS versions, users often operated using elevated rights because software operations require administrator rights With elevated rights, users install and configure their workstations without restriction, often in violation of IT policy Vista s UAC and virtualization allow applications to install and run with nominal user rights Manage network traffic policies centrally Vista s improved firewall and extended Group Policy options enable administrators to centrally manage network ports, applying IPSec rules and packet filters

create, test, and maintain separate OS images with the new disk-imaging tool called ImageX that uses a new file-based format for imaging called Windows Imaging Format (WIM) This means that those deploying Vista now have a native and enhanced, and highly flexible, alternative to the familiar Norton Ghost Using ImageX, administrators can now create and deploy a single image to different types of workstations, with modules aligned with the different hardware, regions, and languages in a global enterprise In effect, an entire level of engineering is nearly removed from what is typically a complex phase of upgrading desktops ImageX and WIM should be of great benefit to all Vista administrators Finally, enhancements to self-help capabilities give Vista users the ability to diagnose and resolve their own support issues The list of new features includes Network Diagnostics; an improved Event Viewer; and automation for resolving hardware failures, networking problems, client performance issues, resource exhaustion, power transition issues, unbootable systems, and service crashes With improved management tools, security, and automation, Vista offers enterprises a powerful means by which to get the benefits of the advanced phases of the IOM As you climb toward the more dynamic phases of the IOM, you substantially reduce your TCO standing Now that we ve looked at a business case for Windows Vista, let s take a peek under the hood and examine what, specifically, this new OS will bring to your organization
VERSIONS OF VISTA
Back in 1985, there was one version of Windows Windows 10 This was the only flavor of Microsoft Windows available; it offered a bare-bones set of applications, and it didn t know a thing about networks, but it did allow for basic multitasking In 1987, Windows 20 came along, with new processor support and a better graphical user interface (GUI) As simple as these versions look to us now, even then it was clear that Microsoft was on to something Then, over the years, as more versions of Windows were introduced to the public and to business Microsoft diversified its product portfolio In 1993, they added Windows NT 31 and the networkable Windows 311, commonly known as Windows for Workgroups Then the pace picked up In 1995, we saw Windows 95; in 1996, Windows NT 40; and from 1998 to 2000, three upgrades to the original Windows 95 platform came along: Windows 98, 98SE, and Windows ME One release and one product every year or so It was all very simple and very serial Something else happened in 2000 you guessed it: the release of Windows 2000 Professional It s here that things started to get a bit more complicated You see, Windows 2000 wasn t a one-trick pony like its predecessors The Windows 2000 family included Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server Since Windows XP rolled out, there have been all sorts of variants, including Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center, Windows XP 64-bit Edition, and even Windows XP Starter Edition, which is marketed to countries like Thailand and Ecuador It took several years for Windows XP to add all its siblings Fast-forward to today, and we see that Windows Vista launched with five versions right out of the chute It was a concerted effort by Microsoft to deliver its new core OS in flavors best suited to what it
