When it comes to networking architecture, Microsoft made good use of the five years between the release of Windows XP and Vista We could write a book just on the improvements to the network architecture in Vista, illustrating the application programming interface (API) hooks and development options, but that would be of little use to networking professionals, who need to know more about how to use a networking service than how to write one Instead, we highlight a few key improvements to the network services architecture to help you better integrate them into your environment

Essentially, Quality of Service (QoS) is about partitioning available bandwidth among your users in such a way as to optimize the user experience Bandwidth, or access to it, can be an issue for almost everyone at some point in time This is true for just about every organization In the past, QoS was made available to applications through an API

embedded in the Windows platform By and large, your users network bandwidth was managed only if their applications were written to participate in the process This and other past limitations have always been a bit disappointing, because QoS has the potential to enhance the user experience by protecting bandwidth when it s needed and giving it up when it s not NOTE You can have QoS at the desktop and QoS on the wide area network (WAN), but just one piece of networking equipment not supporting QoS can break the chain and cause issues for anyone trying to implement it across an enterprise network With the next-generation platform, which includes Vista, QoS is now something that you can control as an administrator using Active Directory Group Policies You can put all the network-bound traffic under the tutelage of QoS QoS Group Policies for Vista allow you to prioritize the sending rate for outgoing network traffic You can set policies to apply to specific applications, specific addresses (IPv4 or IPv6), and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports Because QoS operates at the network layer, applications do not need to directly support QoS capabilities nearly all traffic can be managed by a Group Policy Here is more detail on how you deploy QoS in Vista: First, you can throttle traffic Throttling traffic causes it to be transmitted at a reduced rate, which remains capped and is consistent in the absence of any failures For example, you can restrict the transmission rates coming from a file server so that file copies do not bog down your network Second, you can provide a priority metric that will rank traffic within the QoS traffic queues Qualifying traffic is prioritized by Vista and marked by routers with a Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) value, which is a metric that measures priority The traffic is then directed to routing queues for differentiated delivery based on the priority value Using a DSCP, for example, you can place a higher priority on e-mail traffic than on file transfers In this case, you could ensure that file transfers do not interfere with e-mail while avoiding a cap on file transfer traffic Figure 5-1 shows where QoS policies are managed in Active Directory NOTE Users and administrators often have different priorities Be sure that your users agree with any priorities that you set, or you risk creating a network that is not responsive in the way that allows your users to do their jobs well Like any policy, QoS policies should reflect a compromise between business and technology goals Just like any Group Policy object, QoS policy settings are part of the User Configuration or Computer Configuration Group Policy, are configured with the Group Policy Object Editor, and are linked to Active Directory containers with the Group Policy management console This is shown in Figure 5-2 Vista also introduces qWave Quality Windows A/V Experience qWave brings QoS to streaming audio and video feeds, allowing Vista to de-prioritize traffic that is not as time-sensitive as a contiguous file stream qWave is not managed through Group Policy; rather, it is integrated as a set of QoS technologies in the Next Generation TCP/IP Stack
