Computers that are Vista Capable will run with the so-called Basic User Interface The Basic User Interface shouldn t be considered the red-headed stepchild of the Vista user interfaces, however It s not as polished and shiny as its big brother, Aero, but it s still a step above what you have been working with in Windows XP The Basic User Interface provides new ways of organizing and finding information, security, and improved reliability However, systems configured with less than 1 GB of RAM will not be able to provide the premium experience including the new Aero User Interface Vista s Basic User Interface is shown in Figure 1-3

Wizards
Wizards have followed the same look and feel since 1997, but they are substantially different in Windows Vista The most overt change is, of course, the wizards look However, there are also changes to the way in which a user interacts with the wizard itself Changes include: The purpose of a wizard is more clearly defined at the top of the page The concept of commit pages is implemented These pages make it clear that the next step will be the actual process that the wizard will execute Commit pages typically have a button in the lower-right corner that is labeled with the action to be taken, like Configure device
Microsoft Windows Vista Administration
The Back button has been moved to the upper-left corner of the page This gives more focus to the commit choices, and the Next button is only shown on pages where necessary The Welcome and Completion pages are no longer used This was done to increase the wizards efficiency Wizards can be resized
Vista does another thing to be user-friendly: When a wizard has been completed, a follow-up page can be used to tell the user about related tasks he or she might want to pursue For example, if the user has burned a DVD-ROM, the wizard might ask if he or she wants to copy the disc An example of the new wizard look is shown in Figure 1-5

Notifications
Introduced in Windows 2000, notification balloons pop up in the system tray, telling you about a system event or a problem For instance, if your printer runs out of paper, a balloon will appear to let you know If you connect to the network, it will let you know Some people don t like these balloons, because they tend to pop up out of nowhere and are a minor nuisance Plus, if you are using a full-screen application, like a game, they could disrupt that application Notifications, like the one in Figure 1-6, are present in Vista, but Microsoft aims to make them less intrusive
