Characteristics of the Operating System
ll OSs share certain common characteristics First of all, all operating systems have some degree of CPU specificity Second, all OSs must have their own specifically written applications Third, all OSs take control of the PC after the POST and keep that control until you shut down the system
CPU-Specific
The OS must understand important aspects of the CPU, such as the amount of memory the CPU can handle, what modes of operation it is capable of performing, and the commands needed to perform any operation For that reason, an OS works only with a particular type of processor The Intel and AMD x86 line of CPUs heavily dominates today s PCs, but other platforms have used different CPUs that were completely incompatible with the Intel and AMD lines The most obvious example of the latter is the Motorola Power PC, the CPU inside older Macintosh computers
