TIP: Picking a good password means not picking a dictionary word (including foreign language words), no matter how bizarre or strange that may seem Many crackers trying to break into systems use automated programs that take large, multilingual dictionaries and go through each word, one at a time, trying all of them to see if any of them match any passwords A good technique for picking passwords is to use a phrase and then take the first letter of each word in the phrase For example, Snacking on Oatmeal Squares is good for you translates into SoOSigfy The phrase is easy to remember, even if the password is horribly cryptic In fact, its cryptic nature makes SoOSigfy a good password Another good strategy for picking passwords is to take a word of six letters or more, then substitute two or more letters with numbers For example, the password le77ers (instead of letters) is a pretty good password Of course, passwords are even better if they re longer

For system security reasons, it is a good idea to keep track of who can log in to a system and who cannot Thus, when a user should have his or her access revoked (for example, if the user is leaving the company, changing departments, and so on), the system s administrator needs to revoke the user s access To remove a user, follow these steps: 1 On the left side of the Linuxconf window, click Config, then choose Users Accounts, Normal, then User Accounts This brings up a window similar to that shown previously in Figure 22-3 2 Click on the user you want to remove This takes you to a screen that looks like the User Account Creation screen shown in Figure 22-4, except that this time the user information is already filled out 3 Click the Del button at the bottom of the window 4 The system asks you what to do with that user s data You can either archive the data, delete the data, or leave it in its place If you need to be able to get to the user s work files, it is best to leave the data in its place If you think that the user might come back, archive the data Otherwise, delete it and reclaim the disk space Click on the appropriate choice and then click Accept This brings you back to the user list in step 1 minus, of course, the user you just removed

Changing Root s Password
As was mentioned earlier, the root user is a special user who has a lot of power on the system Obviously, an account with this much power needs to be protected with a good password If you think that someone may have gotten the root password, or that someone who had the root password should no longer have it (for example, a former employee), you should immediately change it To change root s password, follow these steps: 1 Click on Config, then choose Users Accounts, Normal, then Change Root Password This brings up a window similar to that shown in Figure 22-5 2 Enter root s current password in the Password field You must enter the current password immediately before specifying a new one as an additional safeguard, so that in case you left your screen logged in as root, someone won t be able to walk up to the computer and change the root password on you! Click the Accept button when you are done 3 Enter root s new password Follow the suggestion given for the Adding Users section to make sure that you select a good root password Click the Accept button when you re done 4 The system prompts you again to enter root s new password This step is to make sure that if you made any typos the first time that you entered the password, you won t be locked out Click the Accept button when you re done
