Another way to help improve security in parking garages is the use of access control All access points need to be surveyed and a determination made as to whether they are needed If not, they should be fenced and provided with some type of access control to prevent anyone from entering the facility on foot These access points should be monitored by roving security or the parking garage staff to make sure that the fence has not been breached To shut the facility down when not in use, fences, gates, doors, etc should be used Side entrance doors of parking garages that are not open to the public, such as those on private property and that do not permit public use, can have access limited to those who have an access control card issued by the owner Exterior doors that are not near the attendant and open into non-secure areas in public garage should be used as emergency exits only and the doors should fitted with an alarm that sounds when opened The doors should have panic hardware on them and a blank face (no hardware) on the exterior since it is not a designated entry door and not used by anyone for entry into the facility Vehicle access control in public garages is accomplished by making the driver take a ticket to open lift the gate for entering The ticket area is usually monitored by CCTV Upon exiting, the driver presents the ticket to an attendant and pays for the amount of time the garage was used The attendant will release the gate for exiting The process of paying is monitored by CCTV and all of this monitoring and controlled access and exiting can be a deterrent to those with criminal intent from entering the structure to commit crimes Vehicle access to private parking structures can be controlled using an access control card to operate the gates for entry and exiting The entrances and exits should be monitored by CCTV
