Compare Figures 8-20 and 8-21 to see how adjusting the exposure of an image can refine the viewer s focus to a specific area In this case, I burned (darkened) the background and outer edges of my daughter s face to make it recede further into the background, while dodging (lightening) the highlights on her face to make them stand out in a more three-dimensional way To use the Dodge and Burn tools to adjust the exposure within an image, first make sure you have the file you want to edit open in Photoshop Open the Layers palette (choose Window | Layers) and select the layer containing the part you want to blur or sharpen Then, select the appropriate tool (Dodge or Burn) from the toolbox Click the button to the far right of the Options bar or choose Window | Brushes QUICK TIP to access the Brushes palette, and select a Select the Dodge tool to lighten areas Select the good brush for the job If you need to dodge Burn tool to darken areas or burn a very small, specific area, then the harder-edge brushes are fine However, if you want to dodge or burn a bit larger area and keep the edges feathered, I find the softer brushes work better

Photoshop 7: Tips & Techniques
Change the Blending Mode to Paint Highlights and Shadows
I often use Photoshop to create my own web icons and drawings, such as the one shown in the following illustration In cases like this one, I can add a lot to otherwise flat-color drawings by painting in highlights and shadows To see what I mean, compare the before and after view of a portal illustration for a marina, shown here on the left and right, respectively The shadows and highlights around the rim of the hand-drawn portal were added by painting with black and white
However, if I had just painted with black and white using the normal blending mode, the highlights and shadows would have been too harsh Instead, to allow the highlights and shadows to properly blend with the image, I painted the highlights using the Screen blending mode and the shadows using the Multiply blending mode To paint realistic highlights and shadows into an image, make sure the image is open and the layer on which you want to paint is currently selected Select the Brush tool from the toolbox and pick an appropriately sized brush with which to paint
I like to paint on a new layer, so I can easily turn the layer off to compare how the image looked with and without the new additions
Before you begin painting your highlight, switch the blending mode in the Options bar to Screen for highlights or Multiple for shadows Then, paint your highlights and shadows as needed

Duplicate Part of an Image with the Clone Stamp
The Clone Stamp is one of my favorite tools in Photoshop, simply because of how fun it is to work with I ve enjoyed using it to perform such tasks as removing ex-family members from photos and adding extra eyes/ears/nose/toes to annoying family members faces (In fact, to test this tip while also having a bit of fun, I recommend you try it on a photo of an old boyfriend or girlfriend) But seriously, to duplicate part of an image with the Clone Stamp, you first need to make sure the image you want to edit is open in Photoshop and the active layer contains the part of the image you wish to copy Click the Clone Stamp tool in the toolbox and select an appropriately sized brush for the job
