Almost all of the tools discussed so far in this chapter have one thing in common brushes This means the tools require you to select a brush size and style The Brushes palette (shown in the following illustration and accessible by choosing Window | Brushes) is your newly improved, one-stop shopping for all things related to brushes in Photoshop In fact, there are so many options in this one palette that it s easy to get lost just playing (well, for me at least) Click to access palette options or clear the current settings
Access saved (preset) brush settings
These options define the brush tip shape and style
These options define additional characteristics of the brush s stroke
Use this area to define each option in the list of categories along the left side
Preview of brush with current settings applied Delete current brush (only available when viewing a saved brush) Define a new brush
8: Drawing and Painting
This palette is accessible any time you use a tool in the toolbox that needs a tip size That includes each of the following: Brush Pencil History Brush Art History Brush Eraser Clone Stamp Pattern Stamp Dodge Burn Sponge Blur Sharpen Smudge After opening the Brushes palette, you can turn on or off each of the various options independently of one another NOTE
The Brushes palette is not available for the Healing Brush, but you can set some brush options in the mini-brushes palette (called the Brush pop-up palette), accessible by clicking the brush sample display in the Options bar The vast majority of the tips in this chapter have you accessing the Brushes palette in some way, shape, or form, but pay special attention to those titled Use Brush Presets and Create and Save Custom Brushes because those are sure to increase your productivity with the tool Use Brush Presets
Photoshop ships with its Brushes palette already loaded with a set of brushes These brushes have certain settings attached to them and are called brush presets Whether you re looking for a predefined brush to use for quick touch-ups or one in an interesting shape, the brush presets are a great place to start Photoshop 7: Tips & Techniques
NOTE
Don t let the name preset throw you brush presets are just brushes saved with certain settings in Photoshop To access the brush presets, click a tool requiring a brush (such as the Brush or Pencil tool) and perform one of the following: Choose Window | Brushes and click the first option on the left side, labeled Brush Presets, to reveal a display similar to the one shown in Figure 8-12 Click the brush sample display in the Options bar to reveal the Brush pop-up palette, which is shown in Figure 8-13 After performing either task, you ll be presented with a list of brushes, which by default begins with a single-pixel, hard-edged round brush Scroll down the list to see and access additional brushes Click once on any brush to activate it You can edit the settings of a preset brush by choosing from the various options along the left side of the Brushes palette QUICK TIP
When viewing brush presets in the Brushes palette, simply hold your cursor over the brush s name for a few seconds to reveal how it will display in the preview window You re not stuck with only round brushes in Photoshop! In fact, Photoshop 7 ships with more brushes than ever before To load some of these additional brush sets, click the small triangle in the upper-right corner of the Brushes palette or the Brush pop-up palette and choose one of the following: Reset Brushes Select to replace or append the current brushes with the default round brushes Load Brushes Select to load additional brushes that will appear after the existing brushes in the Brush Presets Save Brushes Select to save the current set of brushes Select to load additional brushes that will replace the existing brushes in Replace Brushes the Brush Presets
