Once you become certified, you will want to maintain your credentials This is necessary to demonstrate your continued participation in the PM profession The program for maintaining your credentials is called Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Your certification/CCR cycle begins the day you pass the exam and ends on the same date three years later for all credential holders To meet the CCR requirements, you need to participate in professional development activities in which you earn professional development units (PDUs) PDUs are used to quantify approved professional activities Typically, you earn one PDU for one hour spent in a planned, structured professional development activity Each credential requires a certain number of PDUs per three-year credential cycle Refer to the PMIorg website under the CCR for the latest information because these numbers are subject to change The 2009 credential requirements are detailed in Table 1-4[4] Number of PDUs Needed in the Three-Year Cycle

Table 1-4
PDU Requirements by Credential
1: Bridging the Gap Between PM and PMP
There are currently ten different types (or categories) of PDUs and various ways to obtain them The most common is formal academic education (Category 1), offered through continued education programs with PMI registered education providers (REPs) These are companies, training facilities, or other academic providers that register with, and are recognized by, PMI to meet their educational requirements for classes offered outside of PMI Other ways to obtain PDUs include professional activities and selfdirected learning (Category 2)
NOTE
For Category 1 PDUs, one hour of classroom contact usually equals one PDU
Ask the Expert
Q: A:
What is the best way to maintain my credential
The best way is to follow these steps:
1 Start early by establishing a strategy for attaining your PDUs before your cycle
begins For example, set reminder dates on your calendar for any planned PMI events or education Don t wait until year three of your cycle to start applying for PDUs
2 Maintain a personal folder of all your PDU claim documents The claim documents
should be printed from the online registration process at the PMIorg website This information will be valuable if your reporting form is randomly selected for audit
3 Report activities soon after completion while dates and topics are fresh on your
mind This makes it easier to complete the Activity Reporting Form
4 Take advantage of the opportunity to transfer PDUs from one cycle to the next
You can transfer up to 20 PDUs earned in the last year of your current cycle if you exceed the 60 total needed for the three-year cycle For example, say you earn 20 PDUs the first year of your credential cycle, 30 PDUs the second year, and 30 PDUs in the third year You have a total of 80 PDUs in your three-year cycle (you only need 60) In this scenario, you can carry over 20 PDUs from year three to your next recertification/CCR cycle This is a great way to get a head start on the next cycle
