Project Completion Criteria
Project completion criteria may be listed by project phase, by functional department, or as a milestone The criteria should describe what will be created in terms of deliverables and their characteristics It should also describe what will constitute a successful phase completion The scope statement should contain clearly expressed criteria for success, describing quantitatively what must be accomplished at the completion of the project A good rule of thumb is to have four to seven (maybe more on a large project) concisely documented criteria presented in a priority list or table showing the expected results of the project
Case Study: Sample Completion Criteria
Let s take a look at our case study for the Budweiser Events Center (BEC) and examine a concert to determine project completion criteria We first look at the scope of the project and list out the items that, if done properly, will constitute a successful project The BEC-assigned event manager uses an Event Data Sheet (EDS) to document the details of the contract Once completed, the EDS serves as the project plan In this case the Event Data Sheet serves the same purpose of the project scope statement and outlines all the major support group activities that apply to the event The EDS also outlines all

Sample of BEC Project Completion Criteria
the work that must be done, when it should be done, and by whom (subproject owners are assigned to ensure accountability) As you can see in this case, a single document can serve many purposes The best way to document completion criteria is to look at the work to be done and then pick the top deliverables as measures of success Review these with the customer and project sponsor and once approved they become your approved completion criteria Table 5-2 provides sample project completion criteria for BEC
