When answering the questions, you can choose to include the necessary information to identify yourself to your customers The pass phrase is the encryption key s password It ensures that only you can offer the encryption key to remote clients You must enter at least a four-character pass phrase Another important item is the Common Name field You must use the hostname of your PostgreSQL server as the Common Name This identifies the host that issues the certificate The hostname of your system can be determined by using the ipconfig Windows command in a command prompt window You do not need to include the domain name, unless you want to use it to further identify your system to remote customers It would not be a self-signed certificate if you were to use a different hostname from the one that will offer the certificate to remote clients Finally, you do not have to enter a challenge password when prompted; just hit enter This process creates the file privkeypem, which contains the encryption key, and the file serverreq, which contains a basic certificate Unfortunately, this key file is protected by the pass phrase, which you entered when the encryption key was created This pass phrase must be entered every time the encryption key is used This poses a problem if you automatically start PostgreSQL as a Windows service Since the service is started by the operating system, you can not enter the pass phrase to enable the encryption key To solve this problem, you can remove the pass phrase from the encryption key by using another openssl option:
openssl rsa -in privkeypem -out serverkey
When this command is executed, OpenSSL asks for the pass phrase for the encryption key (hopefully you remember what you used to create it) It then creates a new encryption key, called serverkey, which does not require the pass phrase to be entered Now you have an encryption key and a basic certificate All that is left to do is to convert the certificate to a standard X509 format (required by the SSL protocol) and self-sign it using the encryption key This is done using the following command:
