The first part of the certificate file contains the information you entered when creating the encryption key If you continue to scroll down through the text file, you will see the actual certificate section that contains the encrypted certificate Now copy the serverkey and servercrt files to the PostgreSQL data directory (at the time of this writing, located at C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\82\ data), then restart the PostgreSQL server service You can easily stop and restart the PostgreSQL server service from the pgAdmin III program After starting the program, right-click the PostgreSQL server name and select Stop Service After waiting a few seconds, you can right-click the server name and select Start Service You should then be able to log into the PostgreSQL server from pgAdmin III as normal

After restarting the PostgreSQL server, you can use the psql application to test the SSL connection The psql application attempts to connect to the PostgreSQL in SSL mode first, then tries to connect in plain-text mode if that fails You can tell which method is used for the connection from the opening text after starting the connection:

MONITORING USERS
The third method used for increasing server security is to monitor which users are connected to your PostgreSQL server It always helps to know which users are connected from what network clients Fortunately, the pgAdmin III application provides an excellent interface for this The Server Status tool is a window available from the pgAdmin III menu bar After starting pgAdmin III and logging into the server, choose Tools | Server Status to open the pgAdmin III Server Status window, shown in Figure 10-6 The Server Status window contains four tabs: Status Shows information about the currently logged-in Login Roles Locks Shows information about the current table and record locks Transactions Shows information about pending database transactions Logfile Displays the currently active PostgreSQL log file Each of these tabs provides valuable information about the current status of the PostgreSQL databases The Status tab provides a wealth of information about each Login Role that is connected to the server The refresh rate textbox at the bottom of the Server Status window allows you to set how often the status information is updated in the window This allows you to constantly monitor the Login Roles connected to the database and watch for problems Besides monitoring user connections, you can also monitor the transactions submitted by users As described in 3, you can enable full transaction logging in the PostgreSQL server log file Take care when doing this, though, because the log file can quickly fill up with logging transactions
