Now that you can connect to your PostgreSQL database using ODBC, you can utilize Access s full complement of query and report generators with your PostgreSQL database This section walks through an example of connecting to a PostgreSQL database and creating queries and reports used for the application
Data Type Considerations
The first part of creating any application is to create the database environment There are a few things to consider when creating a PostgreSQL database that will be used with an Access front end If you consider all of these things before designing the Access front end, life will be much simpler for you The biggest thing to consider when creating the PostgreSQL database is the data types used in tables The psqlODBC driver has a problem handling some of the PostgreSQL data types This can cause extremely painful situations for Access programmers The list of data types that psqlODBC directly supports is bool, int2, int4, int8, float4, float8, date, time, abstime, datetime, timestamp, char, varchar, and text All other data types are accommodated by psqlODBC by converting the data into a varchar string Depending on your specific situation, this can cause some problems A common example is the PostgreSQL money data type In a PostgreSQL application, money data type values are entered as string values, but can be used within expressions as numbers, such as adding two money data values When using the psqlODBC driver with Access, any columns defined as the money data type are treated as strings You cannot use them in expressions This is a big-time gotcha The NULL data value is another area of concern 8 described the problems with handling NULL operators This becomes even more complicated when you have two systems that define NULL differently As described in 8, PostgreSQL only considers an empty data value as a NULL value Unfortunately, Access uses an older definition and considers data values of empty strings as a NULL value as well This can cause lots of problems when using an existing Access front-end application and a PostgreSQL back-end database You must take care when checking string data values in tables If your Access application checks for empty strings by using the IS NULL constraint, you will have to rewrite those queries when migrating to a PostgreSQL database There is one additional data type problem that can appear between PostgreSQL and Access databases The PostgreSQL bool data type may also cause you heartburn From the ODBC session configuration parameters shown in Table 12-2, you can see there is an option to treat Boolean data types as a character data type This option exists because Access can treat a Boolean value as the character strings true or false In Access you can perform expressions such as WHERE TEST = 'true' to evaluate Boolean data values By default, PostgreSQL only uses the bit values 1 for true and 0 for false If your application uses the Access text strings for Boolean values, make sure you convert the PostgreSQL table column to a character data type
