Now that the database environment is created, you must create the ODBC session to connect to it from Access Either from the same system that the PostgreSQL server is running

on or from a remote client system, start the ODBC Data Source Administrator program From the ODBC Data Source Administrative window, click the System DSN tab, then click the Add button From the Create New Data Source window, select either the ANSI or Unicode PostgreSQL driver, then enter the information for your new database in the PostgreSQL (Unicode or ANSI) ODBC Driver Setup dialog box, as shown in Figure 12-6 Remember to set the SSL Mode settings as required in the pg_hbaconf configuration file of the PostgreSQL server for the client (see 3) In the Data Source textbox, enter auction This value will be used to reference the auction schema tables in the Microsoft Access programs Unfortunately, there is no way to test the ODBC DSN configuration Fortunately, if you try to connect using the ODBC source and it fails, an fairly detailed error message appears, giving you a good idea what value(s) needs to be changed

Paint Identcode In .NET
Using Barcode printer for Visual Studio .NET Control to generate, create Identcode image in Visual Studio .NET applications.
With the ODBC session created, you can now create a new Access application that uses the PostgreSQL database Start Access and select the option to start a new database Select a name for the new database project (even though the data tables will be located on the PostgreSQL server, Access must still create a mdb file to store the queries, forms, and reports created) Depending on the version of Access you are using, you may be asked if you want to use the wizard application to create the new database Do not use the wizard application to create the database tables Instead, choose the option to just create a blank database You must select a name to call the new database object, such as auction-test

Encode GS1 128 In VB.NET
Using Barcode generation for Visual Studio .NET Control to generate, create UCC.EAN - 128 image in .NET framework applications.
The blank database does not contain any tables, queries, forms, reports, or macros The next step is to create new tables that map to the PostgreSQL server tables This is done by linking tables in Access Linking tables allows Access to retrieve table data directly from the remote table without having to actually have the data in the mdb file on the system Multiple systems can link to the same data sources This enables you to have only one copy of the data on the data source and still allow multiple users to accessing the single data copy Access retrieves the data using standard SQL commands This greatly reduces network load, because the contents of an entire mdb data file do not need to be moved across the network To create a new linked table, choose File | Get External Data | Link Tables The Link window appears, pointing you to a default directory Since this application will link to an ODBC connection instead of to an mdb file, click the Files of Type drop-down arrow and select ODBC Databases The Select Data Source window appears Select the Machine Data Source tab This shows a list of all the DSNs (both User and System) configured on the system The auction data source that was created in the previous step is available Click that entry, then click OK This produces the Link Tables window, shown in Figure 12-7

PostgreSQL 8 for Windows
If you get an error message at this point, check your ODBC session configuration settings, especially the user and password values Remember to use the earl Login Role, along with the auction password assigned to the Login Role It is also important to ensure that your PostgreSQL server s pg_hbaconf file is configured to allow access from the network address of the remote client (see 3) If the ODBC session connected to the PostgreSQL server properly, you will see a list of all tables available on the PostgreSQL database Notice that there are lots of hidden tables in the database that appear in the table list, along with the schema tables you created earlier Click the four auction schema tables (you can select more than one table at a time to link to) and then click OK The four tables (auctionbidder, auctiondonor, auctionitem, auctionpayment) now appear in the Access tables list, as shown in Figure 12-8 You can now treat these tables as any other Access tables Double-clicking a table produces the Access Datasheet view, allowing you to easily enter new data into the table You can also use the Access graphical Design View mode to view the properties of the table columns, although you will not be able to alter any of these properties
