Now that the application tables are stored on the PostgreSQL server, all that is shared in the Access mdb file are the specialized queries, forms, and reports for the application Each user that needs to run the application must have access to this file, either as a copy on their local system or from a shared network drive It is important to remember that the PostgreSQL tables are defined in the mdb file as ODBC sessions Each user that runs the application must have the same ODBC session names defined on their system Each individual user can have their ODBC session configured with a different Login Role name and password, but the Data Source name assigned must match the one used when creating the mdb file

In many cases, if you are migrating from Access to PostgreSQL, you will already have existing Access database tables full of live data Migrating data from an Access database to a PostgreSQL database is often the hardest part of the application migration There are many things that can go wrong in this process You must take data type differences into consideration, as well as maintain table relationships, such as foreign keys, triggers, and indexes There are several commercial utilities available that automatically migrate data from Access tables to PostgreSQL tables There are also a few free solutions available In each case, you must take extreme care when working with live data so that no data loss occurs Of course, you can always perform the migration manually, by creating the tables in PostgreSQL and then exporting data from the Access database to the new PostgreSQL tables The easiest solution is to export Access data as a CSV comma-delineated file In a CSV file, a comma separates each record s column data The CSV file can be imported into the PostgreSQL table using the \copy psql meta-command (described in 5) To test this process, create an Access table using the same column data types as the bidder table created earlier The table properties are shown in Figure 12-12 After creating the table, enter some sample data For this test, make sure you do not use any bidder numbers that duplicate what might already be in your PostgreSQL bidder table, or they will not copy over properly

After you have some sample data in the Access table, you can test exporting it to a PostgreSQL table Right-click the Access table and select Save As/Export In the Save As dialog box, select To an External File or Database, then click OK Another dialog box appears, asking you for the filename and file type to save the data as In the Save as Type textbox, select Text Files, choose a location and a filename, and click the Export button The Export Text Wizard dialog box then guides you through creating an export file of the table data In the first wizard window, select that you want a delimited text file, then click Next In the second wizard window, select the delimiter character you want to use Remember, you should choose a delimiter character that is not present in any of the text data in the table Also, select the Text Qualifier character in the drop-down box In most cases, you can set this to none, as the \copy meta-command does not require text qualifiers When done, click the Finish button to start the export After creating the export text file, you can copy it to the PostgreSQL server and use the \copy meta-command in psql to import the data into the new table:

If any of the data items does not import properly, psql will produce an error message saying which line it is located in Also, since the \copy command is treated as a single transaction, if any of the lines fails, the entire import will fail
