This comments out the configuration files After commenting out the lines, save the file using the same filename Now you should be able to create Win32 Windows applications using your Visual C++ Express Edition installation To start a new project, choose File | New | Project Under the Visual C++ section, there are three options, CLR, Win32, and General In the Win32 section, you will still not see an option for creating Win32 Windows applications However, if you select to create a new Win32 Console application, the Win32 Application Wizard now gives you the option to create a Win32 Windows application (after assigning a project name), as shown in Figure 14-5 Your Visual C++ development environment is almost complete All that is left is to configure the libpq library package This is demonstrated in the next section

THE LIBPQ LIBRARY
The libpq library is part of the PostgreSQL project and provides basic connectivity and functionality for C applications Because most C++ compilers (Visual C++ included) can also use C functions, the libpq library can also be used with most C++ compilers There are three components to the libpq library package: The libpq library file for compiling programs The libpq include files for defining libpq functions The libpq DLL file for running libpq applications The libpqdll file is precompiled for Microsoft Visual C++ applications It contains the libpq functions that are used by Visual C++ applications to access the PostgreSQL server This file is installed in the PostgreSQL Windows installation

The libpq include files are used to define the libpq functions for C and C++ programs They are referenced in a Visual C++ program by using the #include directive to reference the lead header file, libpq-feh:

This header file references all other libpq header files necessary to compile the programs Likewise, the libpq library file provides the function code used to compile C and C++ programs that utilize the libpq functions The library file must also be included when compiling the programs that use these functions The libpq include and library files must be installed as part of the PostgreSQL package installation (see 2) During the Installation Options section, the Development options allow you to install the include files and library files You can check if you have already installed them by looking in the c:\program files\postgresql\82\lib folder There should be an ms folder containing the library files If you did not install these options when you originally installed your PostgreSQL software, you can rerun the installation program and modify the installation to include them Just click the X in the Development box and select the option to enable the installation This is shown in Figure 14-6 After your Visual C++ environment is ready and you have libpq installed on your system, you can start creating C++ programs that access your PostgreSQL database server There are a few things you need to remember when creating libpq Visual C++ programs First, if you are developing new applications using the Visual C++ IDE, you need to include the PostgreSQL include and library directories in the IDE search path This is the same procedure as performed earlier when configuring the Platform SDK features Choose Tools | Options, expand the Projects and Solutions section, and then select
