To access a PostgreSQL server from a Java application you must include the PostgreSQL JDBC driver with the application There are two ways to obtain the PostgreSQL JDBC driver: From the PostgreSQL server installation From the PostgreSQL JDBC web site The standard PostgreSQL server installation provides an option to install the JDBC driver files in the Database Drivers section of the Install Options window, shown in Figure 15-7 When choosing to install the PostgreSQL JDBC drivers from the server installation, they are placed in the jdbc directory under the standard PostgreSQL install directory (see 3)

The other way to install the PostgreSQL JDBC drivers is to download them separately The jdbcpostgresqlorg web site provides the latest PostgreSQL JDBC drivers for download Click the Download link on the left side of the main web page to go to the Download web page You can download either precompiled binary versions of the driver or the complete Java source code to compile your own Since Java applications run on any operating system, there are no separate downloads for separate operating systems You may notice, however, that there are still three different JDBC drivers to download, jdbc2, jdbc2ee, and jdbc3 The different drivers relate to different versions of the Java environment You must download the driver associated with the Java JVM version you are using Different Java versions use different JDBC versions Table 15-1 lists the JDBC driver versions and the Java versions they are used for

The way Java handles versions can be somewhat confusing Java versions 10 and 11 are referred to as the Java 1 platform, which is not supported by Sun anymore PostgreSQL does not supply a JDBC driver for these versions Java version 12 introduced many new concepts and is popularly referred to as the Java 2 platform Version 13 is known as Java 2 version 30, version 14 as Java 2 version 40, and version 15 as Java 2 version 50 If you have downloaded and installed the latest J2SE 50 version, that is really Java version 15, which requires the jdbc3 driver If this is confusing, you can always tell the installed Java JVM version on a system by running the java command-line command with the -version option:
