ecurity is an important, but often misunderstood, concept for database administrators These days database security is not an option, it is a requirement, especially if your PostgreSQL database is running on a system attached to a network Knowing how to allow your customers into the database while blocking the bad guys is something that all database administrators must know how to do This chapter shows the basic security pieces required for putting your PostgreSQL database on a network for multiple customers to access Back in the early days of network computing, as a system administrator, you could put a database system onto a network and safely assume that only your customers would connect to it In today s environment, though, every database server connected to the network becomes a target for unscrupulous individuals, both from outside the network and, unfortunately, sometimes even from inside your own network This section discusses three methods that can be used in multi-user database systems to help control the security environment of the database server: Controlling network users Encrypting network sessions Monitoring database users Each method provides a different level of security for the database, and each is invaluable in your arsenal in protecting your application data
CONTROLLING NETWORK USERS
The first method available for protecting the database is controlling network access You have total control over who can access what databases from the network It is your job to ensure not only that your customers can get to the appropriate databases, but also that unauthorized clients are prevented from accessing the databases There are two components available for controlling access for network database users: Using a server firewall system Using the PostgreSQL configuration files Each component provides a different way of controlling access The combination of the components helps you to implement a secure database server environment
