One last chore is needed you need to let the user know what the status of the install was if they are running your application manually. To do this, we have created a method called ReportToUser(), as shown in Listing 7-21. This method displays the status of each of the four installation steps. Calling this function would be the last thing you do in the Main() method. Listing 7-21. Reporting to an Interactive User VB .NET Private ( _ ByVal ByVal ByVal ByVal ) Dim Shared Sub ReportToUser _ Report As String, _ Requirements As String, _ Install As String, _ Uploaded As String _ strStatusReport As String = ""

In this exercise, you will create a custom installation program that downloads files from a network share and reports the success or failure of this process. You will create the share, create all the methods you need, and add code to these methods. Lastly, you will fill in the code of the Main() method to process the program s arguments, call the methods, and report the status to the user.

1. Open Windows Explorer and create a new folder on your C:\ called Share. Then make this folder into a new network share, as shown in the Creating a Network Share section of this chapter. 2. Create a new project and choose the Console application template. Name your application TestLabSetup and place it on the C:\ drive as well. 3. Delete the code files and create a new class in your project called SetUp. VB .NET will add a file called Module1.vb, while C# will add a file called Program.cs. While there is nothing wrong with these files, let s start from scratch so that both the VB .NET and C# examples will be very similar. 4. Remove any code that Visual Studio adds to the SetUp class. 5. With the SetUp class now empty, create the following methods and any Imports/using statements, as shown here: VB .NET Imports System.Text.RegularExpressions Public Class SetUp Shared Sub Main(ByVal args() As String) End Sub

Note At the time of this writing, My.Computer is not directly available in C#, so you will need to add a reference to it through VB .NET. My.Computer really is just providing a simple means to class other classes from one central class. This is convenient, but not strictly necessary. Still, it is an example of how you can use class in one language from another and it is easy to do as well! So if you are using C#, add a reference to Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll using the Project Add Reference, as you did in Exercise 7-1.
C# using System; using System.Text.RegularExpressions; using Microsoft.VisualBasic.Devices; public class SetUp { static Computer mc;
