Manual tests are the most traditional and, in many companies, are still the most common kind of tests run on a test project. A manual test is simply one that is not automated in any way but is followed step-by-step by a tester, usually directly interacting with an application s screens similar to the way the end user would. Since this kind of test is, by definition, not automated, why does Team Test have an option to create one Many kinds of automated tests require some manual input or some preliminary manual tests to be run first, during, or after the automated test run. Team Test allows these manual tests to be documented within your test projects so that all tests can be managed and tracked together. This allows for a common approach to your test project. It s relatively simple to set up a manual test within the Team Test environment. If you create a list of tests that include a manual test when your other tests run, Team Test can prompt you to start your manual test and then will put up a button for you to push when it is complete. It will also prompt you to indicate whether your manual test passed or failed. Then, the test result for that manual test can be added to the results of the other tests in the run. To create a manual test in your test project, select Test New Test. Click the Manual Test template from the Add New Test dialog box, give it a name, and click OK. Team Test creates a Manual Test template file that contains instructions and a textual template for creating a manual test that you can edit to create the set of steps you d like the tester to follow. Figure 11-18 shows a portion of this template. You can type directly into this page, and add and delete the steps you need, as necessary, using the sections of the template as a guide. When you are done editing the template, save the project. You can view and run the new test in the Test View window or the Test Manager window. When you run your new manual test, you will be prompted with a dialog box indicating that your test run contains manual tests. You can click OK to dismiss this dialog box. The Test Results window will briefly show a pending designation as your test begins to process, and then you will be prompted with a dialog box indicating that your manual test is ready for execution. This is your cue to perform the manual test. So you ll dismiss this dialog box as well and then perform the test by following the steps you wrote in your manual test. Visual Studio presents a window awaiting your input to indicate whether the manual test passed or failed (see Figure 11-19).

Once you click this Apply button, your test result is recorded. If you have run this test along with others (as you will learn how to do in the next section), the test run will continue with your remaining tests and then report the results of your manual tests along with their results.

One of the more useful features of the Team Test software is the ability to create lists of tests that allow you to organize your test project into a variety of flexible test runs. (By the way, a test list in Team Test is similar to a test suite ; a common term in testing. The Microsoft Team Test developers intentionally avoided the word suite because of its multiple definitions in the industry, but it might make more sense to experienced testers.) To create test lists of the tests you ve created, select Test Create New Test List. The Create New Test dialog box that displays allows you to name and describe the list you want to create (see Figure 11-20). You can also use it to create a hierarchy of test lists. You can t add tests to the list from the Create New Test List dialog box, however; you will simply create the empty test list here.

Figure 11-20. Creating a new test list To add tests into a test list, you will open the Test Manager window. Initially the Test Manager window should display all tests in your project; but if you don t see all tests, just click All Loaded Tests in the Test Manager window s left pane (see Figure 11-21). The left pane of the Test Manager window also contains all the test lists you ve created. You can simply drag and drop the tests onto the list of your choice in that left pane. Clicking on a test list from this pane will expand the list and display the tests it contains.
