enough of both the positive and negative testing that a good test professional would employ. This is because the developer s goal is to ensure functionality of the units, not to try to break them. (We testers try our best to break them before the customer/user does!) A good test professional can employ knowledge of testing techniques, such as boundary analysis and equivalence class partitioning, to round out the developer s efforts. The Debug and Trace classes are features of .NET intended for developers, but they are very useful in testing situations as well. You can use these two classes to return information about the application as it runs. For example, if an application is having performance issues, memory management issues, or problems with additional application files, then they may not be detected until runtime. With these classes, you can gather information about what is happening during runtime. If the developer prepared for these tests by adding Debug or Trace statements to the code, you can test how an application handles issues like these to document what is needed for improvement. If they did not, then it may fall to you, the tester, to add these statements. Presuming you have access to the source code, you can use Visual Studio for this. You can make a copy of the source project and then insert your Debug and Trace class coding into that copy. This is called instrumenting the code. The Debug class has been used in Visual Studio a long time, but Microsoft added the Trace class beginning with Visual Studio .NET. This new class has additional commands and features that you will find quite useful. Both Trace and Debug classes can be used to gather information about what is going on in your program while it s running. You can elect to use one or both of these classes. Both are identical in many ways, but here are some important differences: Debug commands are removed when you compile your program in Release mode; Trace commands are not. This is important because it means that adding Trace commands will allow applications to be debugged even after release. Debug commands are only used during software development. Debug commands need Visual Studio installed in order for them to run; Trace commands only need the .NET Framework. You can turn tracing on and off for an application, one or more web pages, or even an entire computer. This isn t so with the Debug option. Trace has both a web version and a Windows version. Each of these provides unique options for their specific environment. Debug does not have different versions.
