This code will display the About box. Notice that for C# you have a little more work than VB .NET. In C#, you must create a new instance of the form before you can show it. So in the C# code, you create a new form called aForm that will look exactly like the AboutBox1 form you created. In earlier versions of VB .NET, you had to do this as well, but now they ve made it a bit easier and you can show the form in one line, as done previously in VB6. 5. Return to the Form Designer once again, and this time select the Special Start Application menu item. Write the following code for the StartApplicationToolStripMenuItem_Click event: btnStartApp.PerformClick() ' for C# add the semicolon at the end!

This line of code saves you from copying and pasting the same code from the button into the menu control. This is more reusable also, so that if you decide to change the code for the button s Click event, this code will not have to change. Listing 5-6 shows the full code for this exercise. Listing 5-6. Adding code to time the length of actions can be an important task on any testing project. Why You can use the time a task takes to complete as a measure of performance for that task. In addition, you can use timing statistics to compare times for common tasks from build-to-build of the applications you test, which can give you a feel for the relative improvement or degradation of performance as the system progresses to completion. Hence, in this section, you ll learn how to take time measurements in .NET. First, you ll do basic timing using the DateTime and TimeSpan classes. Next, you ll look at a VB .NET command that you can also use from C#, then the Shell() command for synchronous timing, and, finally, you ll explore the use of the Timer control for testing.

Basic Test Timing
Determining how long a segment of code takes to process is simple using the DateTime and TimeSpan classes provided by .NET. For VB .NET, first declare three variables for holding start, end, and elapsed time values: Dim StartTime As DateTime Dim EndTime as DateTime Dim Interval As TimeSpan Set the values for StartTime and EndTime at the appropriate times before and after the critical action(s): StartTime = DateTime. Now 'capture current seconds ' do critical task that needs timing EndTime = DateTime. Now Then calculate the difference: Interval = EndTime StartTime For C#, the following code will do the same thing:
