his chapter provides a brief introduction to the fundamental principles behind the concept of functional size of software It is intended for anyone using the ISBSG database who needs to understand what functional size measurement is, the various standardized measurement methods and their respective units of measure, and how functional size fits in with project estimating This chapter is not intended as a primer of the specific rules involved in any of the five functional size measurement (FSM) methods standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) For your reference, however, we have provided website addresses for each of the methods Note that ISBSG accepts projects sized using all five ISO/IEC FSM methods plus a variety of other software-sizing methods
