although I do not recommend patching PIC MCU hex les. Bit editors usually have a difference function, which allows you to compare two hex les to nd differences between them. This function is similar to diff utilities, which also allow you to compare two hex les and have the differences agged between them. A useful function of a bit editor is the ability to display data in different formats; for example, if you wanted to nd a speci c string in a hex le, the character display can make this effort much simpler. One thing you must watch out with older editors (which you may download from the Internet to try out) is that they may put a 0x1A character at the end of a le. The 0x1A character was required by MS-DOS 1.x to indicate a le s end. For some reason, even though MS-DOS and Windows no longer require this le end delimiter and have become more sophisticated in their le handling, this le end indicator has not completely disappeared. In editors that do not place the character at the end of the le, this character is treated as part of the le and displayed as a small square box at the end of the le. In general, it can be deleted without problem. MPLAB and most other tools usually do not have a problem with this character placed at the end of the le but some other tools do. If you are using a tool where this is a problem, you can simply delete the character and resave the le before passing it again to the tool.
