Of special interest to us is the specification of the pin number that is going to provide the signal we will use as the PWM signal. This number, which can vary from 0 to 31, is specified in bits 0 to 5 in the counter control register and is called APIN (see Figure 25-3). In our case, we will be using Pin 3. If we had an interaction with another pin as a part of our selected counter operation, the number of the second pin would be specified in bits 9 to 14 and called BPIN (we do not need this pin in our present application). If we are using the phase-lock capabilities of the system, we need to specify a number that will be used for dividing the field to bring the counts down to a reasonable number. This number is specified in bits 23 to 25. These three bits can specify eight different numbers, and these numbers are listed in a table in the Propeller Manual. We will use the number 1. There are 31 modes in which the counter can operate, and the use of all the 31 modes is beyond our expertise at this time. However, the 31 modes are specified by 5 bits in the counter. These bits go from bit 26 to bit 30. We are interested in a PWM operation. This is specified by setting these bits to 00100. (Refer to the table in the Propeller Manual.) The duration of the phase-lock loop signal that will give us our PWM is specified in the PHSA. This is specified as a negative number so that additions to it will bring the total to 0, at which point the cycle will end and we can start over. This is the high part of the signal, the pulse width part of the PWM. When the low part of the signal is added into the loop, we get a complete cycle. Together, the low and high parts of the signal (the cycle time) are specified to take 10 ms in Program 25-3 (clock frequency/100). The registers discussed in the preceding paragraphs are implemented in Program 25-3.
