This plan de nes the application of quality control and quality assurance to this project. Quality Control Quality control will be applied at each step by the worker performing the step, and by the worker on the next step receiving the deliverable. Gary is extremely experienced and professional. He checks his own work as he goes. Sid will con rm with him at the beginning of each step that he has what he needs, and that he understands what he is to deliver. Sid is an experienced project manager as well as a web-page designer. He will check all the work he receives from Gary as it comes in, to make sure that there are no problems. Sid will receive all materials from the client and check them for usability. If any problems arise, he will return them to the client for rework at the beginning of the step. This will minimize lost time due to client errors. The client is responsible for dealing with issues related to web hosting and domain names. This is of some concern, as the client got them into the present unsatisfactory position. Sid will monitor the work done by the IT manager, who is a mainframe person unfamiliar with web technology. The internal network manager has worked with Sid for ve years on past projects and can be relied on to do quality work on his part. QTI has convinced the customer to use a high-quality web host provider that provides excellent hosting, technical support, and customer service. Quality is assured there. In addition, they are likely to guide the IT manager to do work in a high-quality manner. If we work in this way, QTI is con dent that it can deliver to the customer what they want. Certain design decisions determine the usability of the web page. QTI will follow these industry standards in developing the page. Quality Control Procedures: 1. File size and speed standards. Fast download is essential for an exciting, interesting page. Each graphic le will be no larger than 22 kilobytes. Each page will be under 100 kilobytes. Gary set these standards as follows: AT&T corporate standard (which he helped write) was 11 kilobytes maximum per graphic and 50 kilobytes maximum per page, but assumed the public had 28.8 kilobytes modems. Now that the modem standard has increased to a norm of 56 kilobytes, we can double these numbers to achieve the same download speed with higher-quality graphics. We reviewed this issue in the initial meeting. The target population that the customer is most concerned about (students in college) will

be seeing the page at school, receiving data over a shared T1 link. Given this, these size standards will ensure su cient speed, while giving us more leeway in using high-quality graphics, which the customer wants. Gary will check each le and page size as he completes each page. 2. Resolution standard. Discussion with the customer has determined that we should optimize for 800 600, and that the page should appear attractive at higher resolutions as well. A resolution of 640 480 is out of date at the schools that are the primary target. The page should be usable, but does not need to be optimal, if this will reduce the quality of the page at higher resolutions. 3. Browser compatibility. Gary writes in standard HTML. Sid will load the page into FrontPage and test with Netscape 3.x and 4.x, and IE 3.x and 4.x. We will use only basic search and forms Bots in FrontPage, and not the advanced Bots, which are not compatible with all Netscape versions. 4. Frames compatibility. The design will use frames, and the customer has accepted that older browsers that do not use frames will not be able to see the site. They will see a message that says, You must have a frame-capable browser to view this site. Quality control for change control Note: Insert the change control process from 11 Quality Assurance There are no external or regulatory standards to be met in creating the corporate web page. However, there are industry best practices to be employed by QTI, and quality elements to be reviewed by the customer. Issues QTI will test: 1. Download speed. Sid will double-check le sizes to make sure that they meet the standard. If time allows, the site will be posted on a test location (unpublished URL) and viewed over standard modem connections. If time does not allow, this step can be skipped because we are con dent of Gary s formula and the web hosting company s performance level. 2. Usability at standard resolution. The customer agreed to optimize for 800 600 resolution. QTI will develop and test the page at this resolution. 3. Compatibility with web browsers. QTI will test the page on IE 3.x and 4.x, and Netscape 3.x and 4.x, the current browsers. Sid will make sure that there are no advanced FrontPage Bots installed by accident. 4. Sid will test the You need a frames-capable browser to view this site message. 5. Navigation functionality. Sid will check all links. No external links are planned. 6. Forms functionality. QTI will test this prior to delivery at each client meeting. The client will also test it prior to nal posting. 7. Search functionality. QTI will test this prior to delivery at each client meeting. The client will also test it prior to nal posting.
