8. Visual quality. QTI will check the page before client meetings, but this is primarily a client concern. Issues the client will test: 1. Graphics quality. Do they like the look and feel 2. Appearance. Does it match the corporate image 3. URL functionality. The customer will provide a list of URLs they obtained, and then test the list to make sure all hit the home page. 4. On larger projects, and on projects that have to meet safety, regulatory, or legal requirements, the plan would be much longer. It would specify those outside standards and describe how the project team would ensure compliance with them. It would also document contact with standards bodies and internal and external audit agencies, and, where appropriate, include their o cial approval of the plan. In addition, there is more work the team can do to ensure quality. Here are some steps to consider for larger projects:  At the beginning of each stage, create a quality plan for that stage. Then, in design, create the quality plan for the rest of the project.  Address how we will assure the quality of every deliverable component of the product or service, and also of every project management deliverable.  Address how we will educate the team about quality and support a focus on quality within the team and in communication with our customers.  Address how we will include quality review in our weekly status meetings.  Address how we will apply fundamental principles of quality, such as the need for independent review and testing, on the project.  Address the use of formal quality methodologies in the project.  Address how we will align quality management within the project with quality management methods used by the organization as a whole.  Implement the quality plan through team training and checklists. On some projects, we will need to create another plan, in addition to the project quality plan. It is the test plan, which is discussed in 9. The test plan will need to meet industry-speci c standards.

Quality control involves de ning desired results in detail, reviewing results, and improving processes so that each item is delivered with quality throughout the project. Successful quality control is a team e ort, and so introducing QC to the team is the most important step. We can do this at a status meeting early in the development stage. These meetings are usually pretty dull. You ask each team member how he or she is progressing, and the answer is, I ve just got started, nothing is due yet. Do not stop there. Instead, introduce quality. Let us say that there is a task on the WBS that is due next week. Juan will nish a piece of work, and deliver it to Sue. Juan says he is still working, which is just ne. Turn to Sue and ask, When you get this, what do you expect it to look like If it is as good as it can be, what will it have in it Sue answers by describing the qualities of the deliverable, with a focus on what will make her work easy. Perhaps Juan is surprised. Sue s vision of what he is delivering might be very di erent from his. Or, more likely, Sue may just have a quick idea of how to make it a bit better, or a bit easier for her. Either way, she speci es her ideal input, and he gets the de nition of quality for her output. Now, Juan knows what to do to make Sue s job easier. And, when Sue gets the item in the best possible form, she can focus on doing quality work on her job, rather than rushing to x problems with her inputs. We continue this process. We have each recipient of a deliverable describe, in advance, what he or she wants to receive from the team member delivering on the prior task. The worker for the prior task rede nes his or her work to this standard of quality, and we track the changes. What are the advantages of this team approach to quality  Customer service within the team. Anyone who receives your deliverable is your customer, even when we are all on the same team. We now have an attitude of customer service within the team. Each team member is doing his or her best for the other team members. Team commitment to quality. Each team member can see and understand how receiving good work makes another team member s job easier. Enthusiasm for working well together grows. Proactivity.
