refer back to the process that created it. Output is a synonym. A relationship between two tasks, where one task s start or nish time is linked to another. The aspect of the project, usually scope, time, cost, or quality, that matters most to the customer. The time a task or a project will take from beginning to end, considering that more than one person might be working on a task, and that people will not be working all the time. The delivery of useful results. Work is e ective when it delivers the desired result. Communication is e ective when a change of plan and action takes place as a result of the communication. The number of person-hours it takes to do a task or the total number of person-hours it takes to do a set of tasks or an entire project. The communications process of going up to a higher level of authority to get help addressing a risk or problem. The engineering art of developing our best guess as to what the cost and delivery date will be, independent of what anyone wants. Something we will be leaving out of the project. Something someone most usually the customer wants, which may not be clearly speci ed. Communications which, when received, change our course of action. Another term for a milestone, with an emphasis on the process of approval to get through the gate. Set by the customer, whether or not it is possible in the project. Something that will be part of the project. The information and things that we have at the start of the stage or task. To repeat over and over, usually to achieve greater accuracy, higher quality, or more detail.

GLOSSARY
Milestone Output Phase Process Production The end result of a stage; a large part of the project completed and delivered. A synonym for deliverable. A synonym for stage. The steps of doing the work. The process is the work done on inputs to produce outputs. Regular, routine work that is repeated over and over, leading to the creation of the same products, services, or results time after time. For contrast, see project. A time-limited endeavor with a de ned start and end date, undertaken with the purpose of delivering a unique product, service, or other result, and composed of interrelated and interdependent tasks. The application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. Particularly, planning and tracking of project tasks and leadership of the project team to deliver success and customer delight. The person who is assigned, and takes, responsibility for de ning the purposes and goals of the project, building the team, de ning the work to be done, tracking quality, time, cost, and other project elements, delivering success, and ensuring customer satisfaction. A set of documents evolved over the rst three project stages, and completed by the end of design, which guide all the work of the project. A real-world schedule of project work on a calendar, with start date, delivery date, and scheduled time and e ort for each task, taking into account work periods, sta availability, holidays, and so forth. Refers to the actual testing of project deliverables, product components, and the entire product before and during delivery. Refers to ongoing quality management and review of the process of doing the work of the project.

GLOSSARY
The processes required to ensure that a project will satisfy the needs for which it was undertaken. Risk Anything that decreases the chances of any aspect of project success. Scope A high-level description of what is included and excluded in the resulting product or system, and in the process of completing the project. Scope creep Occurs when additional features or customers are allowed to be included in the project in the middle. The scope grows, and then the delivery date creeps away down the calendar while the total cost creeps upwards. Stage A large set of related tasks leading to the completion of a major deliverable, or milestone. Also called a phase. Step A synonym for task. Stewardship delegation An approach to team management that supports independence and self-management; it is the opposite of micromanagement. System development A series of stages, based on the life cycle from life cycle biology, which are a template for planning a project and are used to increase the likelihood of project success. Task A small job done by one person or a small team at one time delivering a speci c result. Theoretical schedule A schedule that shows project tasks, links, and duration, but does not yet include real-world calendars. Track To compare the actual situation to the plan we created, and note the di erence. Value Anything that bene ts the company or the person who receives it. Winnowing A process of sorting where what is good is retained, and what is bad is thrown away. Work breakdown structure A detailed work plan prepared during the design stage.
