Now that you have seen the big picture of project management in 1 and learned some crucial tools to use over and over in 2 it is time to ask the question: What really matters On one occasion, when I was teaching a project management course to computer professionals, one of them said to me, Sid, this is a great course. But there s way too much here. What are the most important points It was a great question. What do we have to do to ensure project success almost all the time What few items should we learn rst, and do well, to improve our track record Once we do that, we can learn the details, extras, and enhancements later. This chapter is the answer to that question. We present six keys to project success. Do these correctly and your project is almost certain to succeed. Other project management tools add value to a project, but they are not as important as these keys. In this chapter we highlight the most important aspects of these keys. Additional tools to help you with these key processes are covered in Part Two.

Why projects fail Key 1: Manage communication and teamwork Key 2: De ne the project clearly Key 3: Create a detailed work plan Key 4: Ensure high quality Key 5: Use written change control Key 6: Follow through, deliver quality A project for learning Questions for learning
Why Projects Fail
If we want to understand why these six ways of working are, indeed, the most important keys to project success, then we must know why projects do not succeed, why they fail. A project is like a road trip. On a road trip, we start from where we are and try to reach a destination. How can a road trip fail How can a project fail Table 3-1 answers these questions. Now we need to look deeper. We have seen the results we do not want. Now the questions are: Why do projects fail What can we do di erently so that they do not The answers are in Table 3-2. In the rst column, undesirable project outcome, you see the same list we saw on the right-hand side of Table 3-1. After that, we have the cause of that outcome. Then, in column three, key solution, we have the number of the key project method that prevents that mistake. Now we know what actions lead to failure. We can avoid them by using the six keys to project success.
Key 1: Manage Communication and Teamwork
Communications is the process of listening to, and talking to, everyone on the project other than the core, full-time working team. Teamwork includes the processes of communication within the team and everything else that supports and leads the team to success.
Table 3-1
PART ONE Hello, Project Management
What is project failure Comparison of a road trip with a project.
Road trip We end up driving to the wrong place. We get lost on the way.
Project We deliver something other than what the customer wants. We waste a lot of time and money without getting good work done. We plan and plan, but never launch the project. We fail to de ne a key element of project success, so what we create does not work for the customer. The customer requests a crucial change, and we do not follow through. We fail to include a crucial customer or stakeholder in our planning, and the project result does not work as delivered. We deliver project results, but they are not used well by the customer, and value is not realized.
