Every mammal goes through a series of stages in its life, completing an entire cycle. The biological terms for the stages are conception, implantation, gestation, development, maturity, old age, and death. Each stage has its gate, illustrated in Table 4-1. Based on the biological life cycle, project managers and systems developers have created a system development life cycle, or SDLC. There are many versions and variations, but for now we will focus on the basics, the life cycle we will use in Project Management Demysti ed, shown in Table 4-2. As you can see, the SDLC closely follows the biological life cycle. The key stages are at the beginning, where we can still x problems at low cost because we are still in the 1 factor of the 1:10:100 rule. This table also di erentiates the project life cycle from the product life cycle. A project is a process that creates a product. Therefore, the rst ve stages are the project life cycle stages. At that point, the project is over, and the product or service is in production. Operations and maintenance supports the relatively stable, mature production stage. Products and services have a stage beyond maturity, where they are bringing in less value or revenue. This is more of a concern for marketing than it is for project management. Therefore, we will focus our attention on the project stages. However, we will address the entire life cycle, even though the project ends with transition to production and project close. There is real value in this. If we do not think about and understand production and maintenance, then we will design products and services that do not work. There were a number of project management systems that focused exclusively on analysis, design, and development, or even just on design and development. They produced systems that were unsupportable, and gave project management a very bad name. In some ways, project managers are like parents. As parents, we try to give our children a happy childhood, which prepares them for adulthood. As project managers, we try to create a happy, energetic team. But that team, and our project, has a focus. And that focus is the mature productive stage of the product life cycle. Good analysis and design, followed by good development, leads to products and services that have high value and low cost of support. This is the production value of the product or service, and the ultimate value of the project.
