Here are the stages of the SDLC that we will explore more thoroughly in Part Two. The concept stage. Not every bright idea is a good idea. The concept stage is our chance to evaluate every bright idea. When we do, we can discard the ones that will not work early, saving time and money. We create a context diagram, which illustrates the role of the new product or service in our company. We can create a basic plan for the good ideas, and use that plan to explain our ideas, build support for the project, and secure funding. The gate at the end of the concept stage is used to stop bad ideas from becoming projects that waste money. We want and expect many ideas to be cancelled at the end of the concept stage, and only projects with real value to move forward. The analysis stage. This stage is all about the customer and the stakeholders. We seek to de ne what they want at all levels. We document the purpose and value of the system, the goals of the system, and a detailed description of functions and features. We add details to the context diagram. We review the project plans with all stakeholders,

de ning what the product or service will or will not do. We complete the stage by getting a commitment to funding and support for the project. The design stage. We design the product or service, and also the project, the process that will create the product or service. We create a plan that addresses all nine areas of project management knowledge to our project and speci es how we will manage each of them throughout the project. When the design stage is complete, we have approval to go ahead, and we begin to build the system. The development stage. We create the product or service. This involves building, buying, integrating, customizing, and con guring components. We write the documentation. We test each component and the whole system, and x problems as we nd them. The key job of the project manager is tracking the project to the plan, ensuring that all work is being done on time and on budget. This includes adjusting the product and project plans with change control, as needed, and managing unexpected events through risk management. The transition to production stage. Every system, no matter how well designed, built, and tested, encounters surprises when it hits the real world. The transition to production stage is similar to our rst job after high school or college. When we graduated, we thought we were ready for the real world. But our rst job teaches us what we really need to know. The same is true with the products and services we create. The pilot test and the user s rst encounter with the system is sometimes called the storm period. So, in the transition to production stage, we get ready for the storm. We nish all testing and documentation. The storm starts when we deliver the product or service. We provide training and deploy the system. As project managers, we track everything daily and have teams ready to solve problems as soon as they appear. Project close. At this point, the project is over, and the productive period of the life of the product or service we created begins. As project managers, we nalize the details. We evaluate project results and processes, and prepare a lessons learned document. We ensure nancial and legal closure. The project team may stay together for a new project, or may be reassigned. Either way, we make sure to take care of our people. The production and maintenance stage. At this point, the project is over, and the ongoing production life of the product or service continues for a number of years. The product or service is adding value making money, helping the organization succeed, or making a customer happy.
