How do you get more for your money Talk to experts. Our rst experts were friends who love to watch television. From them, I learned that a lot of my favorite television can be found on the internet, ready for download, in case we miss an episode. That would be excellent. When a project manager hears a customer say, Boy, that would be great! his or her rst reaction should be fear: Scope creep! You re adding more to the project. And we were. But, since we were still in analysis, there was a chance we could make it succeed. After all, with a home business, a computer with a DVD burner is a business expense, not an additional cost on the home theater project. Still, bringing the computer into the picture makes the project more complicated. To avoid trouble, it was time to introduce the double waterfall. First, get the home theater set up with DVD, video recorder, and surround-sound stereo. Then, for the second waterfall, we will add on downloading television shows, learning all about codecs coder-decoders, the software that plays di erent audio and video formats and either burning DVDs that the DVD player can read or connecting the computer to the home theater system. How did I learn we needed to do all that More talking to experts. When I read the previous paragraph, I see a lot of architectural thinking. In fact, creative architectural work is the backbone of this project. Because we are choosing to integrate components ourselves, we are able to do the project for about $2,000, instead of $10,000 to $25,000, which would be the cost of buying a complete system. Keeping some old components and linking the pieces together ourselves is what we are doing. The architectural term is integration. So, combining brainstorming for additional value, talking to experts, bringing in the double waterfall to avoid scope creep, and re ning our architectural plan, we have set up the project for success.

Now is the time for you to complete the analysis stage of your project for learning. Begin by reviewing the results of the concept stage. Then go through this chapter, reviewing inputs, process, outputs, and tools. Use as many of the tools as you can, even if they seem inappropriate for your particular project. For example, you might use the full-sized project overview form, even though this project really only needs a quick project overview. Or you might prepare for a stakeholder meeting with yourself, have an agenda with questions, talk to yourself, and write up the results as a speci cations document. Remember, you have two goals. One is to complete the project, and the other is to get comfortable with using the tools of project management. For your end-of-stage review, compare what you created with the list of outputs for the analysis stage, discussed above. If anything is missing or not completely clear, send it back to yourself for rework! When you have completed the analysis stage, you are ready to read the next chapter and design your project for learning.

Being a project manager requires a lot of exibility. See if you can think of several ways to handle each of the following situations. If you cannot think of at least three approaches to each problem, make a note to read the chapter or chapters listed in parentheses after each item. The project on which you are working requires a new piece of equipment that is due out in three months from the vendor, but may be delayed. The project is on a short deadline. ( 12) You are replacing an existing o ce system, and two di erent customer groups have very di erent needs. One nds the current system unusable, and needs a quick solution, even if it has only basic features. The other is satis ed with the current system, and will not use the new system unless it has much better features, including a long list of improvements for which the group is more than willing to pay.
