pile up. There are always errors, but the more of them that reach testing, the more trouble we will have delivering the project on time. We also track time and cost. If it looks like we will not be able to keep on schedule or stay within budget for any reason, then that is a risk event in itself. If one part of the project is running behind schedule or over budget, we need to pay attention to the issues there. If we cannot resolve the issue and keep the project on schedule and within budget, we need to escalate the issue and get assistance as described in 12. As we approach the end of the development stage, we should focus on completion. Any tasks that are nearly done should be nished and tested. Tasks that were set aside should be addressed. Team members should be supported in focusing on seeing how their contribution ts into the whole product or service, and how the customer will use it.

The work of testing is split between development and transition to production. The basic di erence is that, during development, we test parts of the product or service, and then the whole product or service. During transition, we test the product or service in actual use, in relationship to customers, other equipment, and systems, and it is a very complex and changing realworld environment. In development, we should plan to complete the tests listed below. As we discussed earlier, this means planning for the test, diagnosis, rework, and as much retesting as necessary. Each component should pass its low-level and high-level tests. Product integration testing should ensure that all components work together. Integration testing is done progressively as each component is nished. End-to-end testing ensures that the system works in its environment.

Many more tests are still to come during transition to production. It is essential that we have a reliable product or service at the end of development. Otherwise, transition to production will be delayed by rework, customers will be dismayed by what they see, and the project may fail. For more information about testing and test schedules, see 9.

At last we have something, an actual product or service, to show for all the work we have done. At the end of the development stage, the team will deliver: A product or service that has been tested and meets the requirements speci cation and design speci cation, as modi ed by change control. A nearly nal user manual or help system. Technical speci cations to be used by future teams for support and modi cations, such as software code documentation and hardware technical speci cations designed to be used by future programmers and engineers who will support and modify the system. A proposed nal support plan. A proposed nal training plan. A complete high-level and low-level test plan. A test bed and test data les or test cases. Documentation of all test results. Documentation of any open issues. A draft training plan. Of course, not all of these will be needed on every project. In the design stage, we determined what products and services would be of value to the customer, and that is the actual, speci c list of outputs for the project you are managing. As project managers, we will deliver: A plan for transition to production and deployment, covering all steps to be taken and the management of issues from all nine areas of knowledge. A validated project overview, with any changes resulting from change control integrated. The business case, with the cost budget and delivery dates validated through PERT estimation. The project schedule, created by the WBS process and PERT, showing estimated vs. actual results and incorporating project change, probably maintained in a project management software tool. The project budget, in detail, with estimated vs. actual results to date. A risk plan for the remainder of the project. We may have one other set of deliverables: presentations or demonstrations of the system for the sponsor and the customers. Since we have something to show for all of our work, we should show it!
