Setting Portfolio View Options
Quicken also enables you to specify the period for return calculations and the tax rate used in the Portfolio window. Setting these options enables you to fine-tune the way Quicken makes Portfolio window calculations. Choose Preferences from the Options menu on the Portfolio window s button bar (refer to Figure 12-4). Use the Portfolio View Options dialog that appears (shown here) to set options and click OK. Your options are as follows:
Show Return Calculations For
The Show Return Calculations For area offers two options for determining the period for which Quicken calculates the return on investment:
12 / Evaluating Your Position
Entire History includes all transactions in the calculations. From enables you to enter a starting date for calculations. All transactions between that starting date and the current date are included in the calculations.
Tax Rate Used In Portfolio View Use the Tax Bracket drop-down list to choose
tax rates that should be used in tax calculations for capital gains. If you are utilizing Quicken s Tax Planner, which I cover in 20, choose Use Tax Planner Rate. Otherwise, choose the rates that are appropriate for your financial situation.
Tracking Security Values
As the individual views within the Investing tab illustrate, Quicken can automatically do all the math to tell you what your investments are worth if you take the time to enter the per-share prices of each of your securities. When you record transactions, Quicken automatically records the security price. It uses the most recently entered price as an estimate to calculate the current value of the investment. You can see this in the Portfolio window (see Figure 12-4) those gray est. characters indicate that the price is an estimate. The est. characters appear if the current date is on a weekend or holiday, or if you haven t entered or downloaded the current day s prices. Of course, the Portfolio window and all of Quicken s investing reports and charts are a lot more valuable with up-to-date security price information and a history of prices. You can enter price information in two ways: manually (the hard way) and automatically (the easy way). I show you how to enter security prices manually in this chapter; to learn how to enter prices automatically via Internet download, consult 11.
