An account is a record of what you either own or owe. For example, your checking account is a record of cash on deposit in the bank that is available for writing checks. A credit card account is a record of money you owe to the credit card company or bank for the use of your credit card. All transactions either increase or decrease the balance in one or more accounts. Express Setup helps you create accounts within Quicken, so you can track the activity and balances in your bank, credit card, investment, and other accounts.

To set up accounts properly, you should have balance information for the accounts that you want to monitor with Quicken. You can get this information from your most recent bank, investment, and credit card statements. It s a good idea to gather these documents before you start the setup process, so they re on hand when you need them. If you plan to use Quicken to replace an existing accounting system whether it s paper-based or prepared with a different computer program you may also find it helpful to have a chart of accounts (a list of account names) or recent financial statements. This way, when you set up Quicken accounts, you can use familiar names.
