New Account enables you to set up a brand-new account for the loan. Be sure to enter a name for the account. Existing Account enables you to select one of your existing debt accounts for the loan. If you re creating this loan as part of an asset creation process, the account will have already been created, named, and selected for you. Otherwise, this option is available only if you have already created a debt account that isn t already linked to a loan.

Loan Details No matter how you create the loan, you ll be prompted for information about the loan creation, amount, and payments. It s important to be accurate; get the dates and numbers directly from a loan statement or agreement if possible. Quicken can calculate some of the values such as the loan balance and monthly payments for you. It does this automatically based on your answers to questions in the Loan Setup dialog. Keep in mind, however, that Quicken s calculated amounts may not exactly match those calculated by your bank or finance company. When you ve finished entering loan information in the Loan Setup dialog, a series of Summary tab windows display entered and calculated values. Here s what the Loan Setup dialog s last two Summary screens look like for a $20,000, five-year car loan started on July 1, 2008:

When you set up a loan, Quicken automatically prompts you to set up payment information by displaying the Edit Loan Payment dialog, which is shown on the next page. Enter information in this dialog to set up the payment. If the total payment should include additional amounts for property taxes, insurance, or other escrow items, click the Edit button. This displays the Split Transaction window, which you can use to enter categories, tags, memos, and amounts to be added to the payment.

In the Transaction area of the dialog, you can specify the type and method for the transaction. For type, three options appear on the drop-down list:
Payment is a transaction recorded in your account register only. You must manually write and mail a check for payment. This is covered in 5. Print Check is a transaction recorded in the Write Checks dialog and account register. You can use the Print Check command to print the check, and then you can mail it for payment. This is also covered in 5. Online Pmt creates a payment instruction to be processed by your financial institution for use with online payment. This is covered in 6. This option appears only if at least one of your bank accounts is enabled for Quicken s Online Payment feature.
To indicate the method of payment, click the Payment Method button. The Select Payment Method dialog, shown here, appears. This dialog offers three Payment Type options:

Scheduled Bill is a transaction scheduled for the future. If you select this option, you must also choose options and enter values to specify how Quicken should enter the transaction, which account should be used to pay, and how many days in advance it should be entered and paid. All this is covered in 7. Memorized Payee is a transaction memorized for use with QuickFill or Quicken s Calendar. This is also covered in 7. Repeating Online Payment is a recurring online payment instruction processed by your financial institution. If you select this option, you must also select a repeating online payment transaction from a drop-down list. If you have not already created a transaction to link to this loan payment, select one of the other options and return to this dialog after you have created the required transaction. Consult 6 for complete instructions.
