When Quicken has enough data about your assumptions to calculate plan results, it displays them graphically in the Plan: Results area of the Planning tab (see Figure 16-1). The top of the Plan: Results area tells you whether your plan is working and how much you should have in investments at retirement. Amounts are in today s dollars; to view them in future dollars, choose Show Amounts In Future Value from the Options pop-up menu at the top right of the area. The graph beneath this summary shows your taxable and tax-deferred savings. The ideal shape of this graph shows a steady increase until the year you retire and then a gradual decrease. You can click a column to display a yellow box with

the exact value in it. Plan results change automatically based on a variety of changes within your Quicken data file:
When the account balances referred to in the plan change, the plan changes accordingly. When you change plan assumptions, the plan changes accordingly. When you use Quicken s planners to plan for major purchases, college, retirement, and other events that affect your finances, the plan changes to include these events. When you play what if with assumptions and save the changes as your plan, the plan changes accordingly. I tell you about playing what if a little later in this chapter, in the section Playing What If.
Viewing Event Status and Savings Targets
Quicken also keeps track of your progress toward certain events and savings targets. It displays this information in the Planning tab of the Financial Overview window (refer to Figure 16-1).
Event Status displays information about events in your plan that are funded with specific accounts. Monthly Savings Targets displays information about your savings toward events in your plan.
Clicking a link for an expense displays the summary area of the appropriate planner. As discussed next, you can use the planner to review and modify event information.
Using Quicken s Planners
Quicken s planners offer another way to add financial planning information to Quicken. Rather than enter general assumptions, most planners concentrate on specific events or goals, such as buying a home or sending a child to college. Unlike the plan assumptions dialogs discussed earlier in this chapter, the individual planners provide more information about the event or item you are planning for. In this part of the chapter, I introduce the individual planners and give you an idea of how their interface works. You can then explore each of the planners on your own.

A Look at the Planners
Quicken includes five planners, all of which can be accessed through commands on the Planning menu or via links in the Planning tab:
Retirement Planner is the most comprehensive planner. It looks at all of your current financial information, as well as the results of other planners, to help you plan for retirement. It basically reviews all data entered for Quicken Planner assumptions, as discussed earlier in this chapter. College Planner helps you plan for your children s college education. It gathers the same information you could enter for a new college expense in the College Expenses tab of the Expenses dialog. Home Purchase Planner helps you plan for the purchase of a new home. It gathers the same information you could enter for a new home in the Planned Assets tab of the Homes And Assets dialog. Debt Reduction Planner helps you save money while getting out of debt as quickly as possible. I cover this planner in detail in 18. Special Purchase Planner helps you plan for special purchases, such as vacations, vehicles, and other large expenditures. It gathers the same information you could enter for major expenditures in the Special Expenses tab of the Expenses dialog.
All of these planners work pretty much the same way. You enter information about your current financial situation or let Quicken enter the information for you based on account balances and category transactions. Then you tell the planner a little about the event you re planning for. For example, the College Planner needs to know how old your children are now and when you expect them to go to college. It also needs to know how much you expect their education to cost. When you enter all this information into Quicken, it performs calculations and shows you results. Planning information is saved within your Quicken data file so you can view or update it at any time.
