You can add details to the assumptions of your financial plan by using Quicken s planners to add specific events to the plan. The information you enter into these plans becomes part of your overall financial plan, thus changing the Plan Results. When you use any of these planners to create plans, each individual plan appears in the Planning tab and on submenus that appear on the Planning menu. This makes it easy to view and change plans. Here s a look at four of Quicken s planners; the other one (the Debt Reduction Planner) is covered in 18.

The Retirement Planner enables you to plan for your retirement. It is, by far, the most exhaustive planner, primarily because it requires all the information entered as plan assumptions. In fact, if you have already entered plan assumptions, you can go through the Retirement Planner very quickly; if not, it ll take you about 30 minutes to enter all the information it requires. (That information will be saved for use by other planners.) To start, choose Planning | Retirement Planner or click the Retirement Planner link in the Planners area of the Planning tab to display the My Retirement Plan window (see Figure 16-3). Read the information in the window, and then click the Next link to begin entering information. Follow the prompts that appear to open dialogs and enter data for a number of topics, many of which may already include information from plan assumptions or other planners. The items you complete are checked off in the navigation bar on the left side of the My Retirement Plan window; you can also click links for items there to complete them in any order you like.

Choose Planning | College Planner or click the College Planner link in the Planners area of the Planning tab to display the Can I Afford College window. Read the information in the introduction screen and click the Next link to get started. Then follow the prompts to add or edit information about a dependent s college education. When you have finished entering information in the planner windows, the Results screen shows your financial plan with your child s college education included. Home Purchase Planner
The Home Purchase Planner enables you to plan for the purchase of a home either a primary residence or a vacation home. Like the other planners, it prompts you for information about a specific event, but it also has built-in calculators to help you determine affordability so you can understand how a home would fit into your budget. To get started, choose Planning | Home Purchase Planner or click the Home Purchase Planner link in the Planners area of the Planning tab to display the Can I Afford That House window. Read the information on the introduction screen and click the Next link. Then follow the prompts to enter information about your finances (see Figure 16-4) and the proposed purchase. In some cases, you can get information from your Quicken data file and from the Internet by clicking links within the window. When you re finished entering information, the planner displays its results. Subsequent screens summarize the information and display a glossary of terms you should know when purchasing a home.
