Once you have created a budget, you can fine-tune it to set the categories and amounts that should appear. If you created your budget automatically, this is a matter of reviewing budget income, expense, and savings items, and making changes you deem necessary. If you created a budget manually, however, you must manually add categories and set amounts for each one. You do this in the Income, Expenses, and Savings tabs of the Budget window. Because these windows all look and work pretty much the same way, only one is illustrated: the Expenses tab, which is shown in Figure 18-4.

By default, when you create a budget automatically, Quicken includes only the categories for which transactions exist. When you create a budget manually, Quicken does not include any categories at all; all categories must be added manually.

Change the budget amount by entering values in each of the amount boxes in the Budget area. If you selected the Average Amount method, you can also choose a frequency from the Period drop-down list.
Set up an alert for a category by turning on the Notify Me check box in the Alert area and entering an amount or percent in one of the two text boxes below it. (This option appears for Expense categories only.) If your monthly spending exceeds the amount you specified, Quicken displays a dialog to tell you.
Adding a Savings Transfer The Savings tab of the Budget window enables you to add budgeted transfers to investment or savings accounts. Click the Choose Accounts button at the bottom of the window and use the dialog that appears to select the accounts you want to transfer money to. Then set Budget options for the account as instructed in the preceding section.

Analyzing Actual Category Amounts Clicking the Analyze
button in the Budget window displays a column chart, like the one shown here, of actual expenditures for the selected category. This helps you visualize the actual pattern of income, expense, or savings.
Viewing Amounts by Category Group To organize categories by
group, turn on the Show Category Groups check box at the bottom of the Budget window. A dialog may appear, telling you that some category groups contain both income and expense items; click OK to dismiss it. The view changes to sort categories by group, as shown in Figure 18-5, and the separate

Income, Expenses, and Savings tabs are replaced by a single Budget tab. To return to the default view, turn off the Show Category Groups check box and choose Separate View from the Options menu on the window s button bar.
Viewing a Completed Budget
When you re finished setting options in the Income, Expenses, and Savings tabs of the Budget window, click the Summary tab. This displays the budget summary, which is shown in Figure 18-6.
Working with Budgets
Here are a few additional things you might want to do with Quicken s budgeting feature. All of these things can be done from the Setup tab of the Budget window. The following illustrations show what the tab looks like when you ve created one budget (left) and when you ve created multiple budgets (right):
