Once you have created a budget you can live with, it s a good idea to periodically compare your actual income and expenditures to budgeted amounts. Quicken lets you do this in a number of different ways. There s one important thing to keep in mind when comparing budgeted amounts to actual results: Make sure your comparison is for the period for which you have recorded data. For example, don t view a year-to-date (YTD) budget report if you began entering data into Quicken in March. Instead, customize the report to show actual transactions beginning in March. I provide details about creating and customizing reports and graphs in 9.

Budget Reports and Graphs The Reports menu on the button bar in the Budget window offers two reports and one graph for comparing budgeted amounts to actual results:
Budget Report displays actual and budgeted transactions. Figure 18-7 shows a budget report with YTD amounts. Monthly Budget Report displays the actual and budgeted transactions by month. Monthly Budget Graph graphically displays the favorable and unfavorable differences between monthly actual and budgeted income amounts.
Budget Comparison Graphs You can display budget graphs in a custom view of
the Quicken Home window. This feature enables you to keep an eye on the budget categories and groups that interest you most. To use this feature, switch to the My Pages tab and customize it as instructed in Appendix B. The following items or snapshots provide budget information:
Budget displays a chart that compares your actual to budgeted income and expenses. Budget Goal Progress tracks spending for a single category s budget. This helps you monitor spending for a specific category that s important to you. Budgeted Categories compares actual category amounts with your budget. Budgeted Net Income displays a chart that compares your budgeted to actual net income. Category Group Budget tracks progress against your budget by category group.
You can customize any of the graphs by right-clicking them and choosing the Customize This Chart or Customize This Graph command from the context menu that appears. I explain how to customize reports and graphs in 9.

Forecasting
Forecasting uses known and estimated transactions to provide a general overview of your future financial situation. This crystal ball can help you spot potential cash flow problems (or surpluses) so you can prepare for them.
Creating a Forecast
A forecast without data is like a crystal ball that s full of fog it doesn t show you much. To get a clear picture, you need to enter data about future transactions by creating a forecast. To create a forecast, begin by opening the Cash Flow Forecast window. Choose Planning | Cash Flow Forecast. If you have not yet created a forecast, the Automatically Create Forecast dialog, which is shown here, appears. If you have
