A PIN, or personal identification number, is a secret password you must use to access your accounts online. If you have an ATM card or cash-advance capabilities through your credit card, you probably already have at least one PIN, so the idea shouldn t be new to you. It simply prevents anyone from accessing the account for any reason without first entering the correct PIN. An account s PIN is initially assigned by the bank, credit card company, or brokerage firm. Some companies, such as American Express, require that your PIN consist of a mixture of letters and numbers for additional security. You can change your PINs to make them easier to remember just don t use something obvious like your birthday or telephone number. And don t write it on a sticky note and attach it to your computer s monitor! If you think someone might have guessed your PIN, you can change it. In fact, it s a good idea to change all your PINs and passwords regularly not just the ones you use in Quicken.

Once you re online and you ve correctly entered your PIN, the instructions that flow from your computer to the bank, credit card company, or brokerage firm are encrypted. This means they are encoded in such a way that anyone able to tap in to the transmission would hear only gibberish. Quicken does the encryption using, at a minimum, the 56-bit single Data Encryption Standard (DES). Quicken is also capable of encrypting data with stronger methods, including the 128-bit RC4 or 168-bit triple DES. Once the encrypted information reaches the computer at the bank, credit card company, or brokerage firm, it is unencrypted, and then validated and processed. Encryption makes it virtually impossible for any unauthorized party to listen in to your transmission. It also makes it impossible for someone to alter a

Together, these security methods make online financial transactions secure even more secure than telephone banking, which you may already use!
Getting Connected
To take advantage of Quicken s online features, you need a connection to the Internet. You get that through an ISP, an organization that provides access to the Internet, usually for a monthly fee. These days, literally thousands of ISPs, including local phone and cable television companies, can provide the access you need for Quicken s online features. If you don t already have an account with an ISP, you must set one up before you can configure Quicken to use its online features. Check your local phone book or newspaper to find an ISP near you. Your ISP can explain everything you need to get connected and help you set up your computer to go online.
Setting Up and Testing an Internet Connection
To use Quicken s online features, you may need to set up Quicken for your Internet connection. This part of the chapter explains how to set up, test, and troubleshoot a Quicken Internet connection. If you went through the Setup process discussed in 2 and created at least one account that utilizes Quicken s online features, chances are Quicken is already set up to work with your Internet connection. If that s the case, you can skip this section, unless you need to modify or troubleshoot your connection.
