If you can connect to the Internet from another program but not from Quicken, the problem may be with Quicken s Internet connection setup. Go back to the section titled Internet Connection Setup earlier in this chapter, and repeat the setup process. You ll probably want to select the second option in the Internet Connection Setup dialog. If you can t connect to the Internet from any other program or with dial-up networking (for dial-up connections), the problem is with your Internet setup for Windows, your modem (for dial-up connections), your network (for direct connections), or your router (for direct connections). You must fix any problem you find before you can successfully set up and connect with Quicken. Consult Windows Help for assistance.

Restart your computer. Sometimes resetting your computer s system software can clear network problems. Ask your system administrator to check your network setup. Consult your ISP for additional assistance.
Exploring Quicken s Web-Based Features
You access Quicken s Web-based features from within Quicken software. In some cases, Quicken uses its built-in Web browser to display information; in other cases, it opens the default browser on your computer. In this section, I tell new Internet users a little more about using the Web and then explain how you can access Quicken s Web-based features.
Quicken 2009 The Official Guide
An Introduction to Web Surfing
Let me take a moment to explain exactly what you re doing when you connect to Quicken.com and the other Quicken features on the Web. If you re brand new to Web surfing that is, exploring Web sites be sure to read this section. But if you re a seasoned surfer, you probably already know all this stuff and can skip it. One more thing: This section is not designed to explain everything you ll ever need to know about browsing the World Wide Web. It provides the basic information you need to use the Web to get the information you need.
Going Online
When you access Quicken s online features, you do so by connecting to the Internet through your ISP. It doesn t matter whether you connect via a modem or a network, or whether your ISP is America Online, your local cable company, or Joe s Internet Service. The main thing is having a connection or a conduit for information. Think of an Internet connection as some PVC piping running from your computer to your ISP s computer, with a valve to control the flow of information. Once the valve is open (you re connected), any information can flow through the pipe in either direction. You can even exchange information through that pipe in both directions at the same time. This makes it possible to download (or retrieve) a Web page with your Web browser while you upload (or send) e-mail with your e-mail program. Quicken s online features use the pipe (or connection) in two ways:
The integrated Web browser enables you to request and receive the information you want. It s live and interactive click a link, and a moment later your information starts to appear. Quicken can display Web pages in its built-in Internet window (see Figure 4-1) or your default browser s window. Transaction Download, Online Payment, and several other features work in the background to communicate with financial institutions with which you have accounts. Quicken sends information you prepared in advance and retrieves the information the financial institution has waiting for you.
This chapter concentrates on Web browsing with Quicken using Quicken s integrated Web browser to access interactive features on Quicken.com. But it also provides some information to help you find financial institutions that work with Quicken for the Transaction Download and Online Payment features.
